A pretty cool thing about the Fediverse:

It will still be around in a decade. Even two decades.

Usenet still exists. IRC still exists. Email still exists. When you build platforms on open protocols and standards, it doesn't actually matter what corporations try and do to enshittify it. So long as there are people who are still willing to run instances, and users who still want to talk to one another without going through some corporation's platform, it'll still be here.

I was in Portland, OR in February this year.

It's a wonderful city. It has really good public transport, a huge huge bookshop, good beer, friendly people, and diversity and tolerance in spades.

I even jumped on a city shared e-bike for a trip I needed to make which would have been annoying on the buses!

There are a lot of homeless people, yes, but as far as I could tell that was because of the tolerant city not forever moving them on, not because it's a bad place in any way.

Leave PDX alone!

HTML

One thing I like about XML, and in particular, that XML introduced is —

XML introduced a notation for self-closing (i.e., void) tags.

I.e., the trailing slash

For example:

<img src="..." />

(Note the "/>" at the end of the tag.)

...

From the point of view or someone writing a parser, I liked this convention.

...

I think this would have also been a great UX for custom HTML elements, too. As it would make it so wouldn't have to always include a closing tag.

There is absolutely no good faith reason to use the term “AI” for any technology one is selling.

It serves only for dazzling people into thinking the technology has capabilities that it doesn’t.

If one wants a technology to be trustworthy, just use a transparent, informative term without hype.

Half-baked thought, inspired by the Australian government considering whether GitHub might be a social network and therefore damaging to children:

I have yet to hear of any government trying to distinguish between emancipatory (personal agency increasing) technology and manipulative (personal agency decreasing) technology, and so absurdities like this are inevitable.

The problem isn’t young people doing things in general. It’s capital’s relatively unrestricted ability to coax people (not just young people) into behaving in whatever ways are most profitable.

We can argue about whether it would be excessive to have a regulatory commission investigating dark UI patterns or whatever, but that would be way more in line with the reality of where these harms come from.
