International and US law is clear: troops must obey lawful orders ONLY.

An unlawful order is not binding, and following it can itself be criminal. US doctrine and practice reject “just following orders” if the soldier knew or should have known act was unlawful.

The oath in the US is to the Constitution, not to blindly obey leaders. As the Law of War Manual says:

"members of the armed forces are bound to obey only the lawful orders"

I know everything in the world is terrible right now, but I'm one week in to fostering this lovely little rescue puppy. It's taken him a few days to get used to people, but he's starting to come out of his shell. He's still not entirely sure what to make of us, but he's a curious little guy.

Après le procès de Marine Le Pen, c'est la seconde fois en 6 mois que le Premier président de la cour d'appel de Paris, Jacques Boulard, émet un communiqué pour déplorer des menaces contre des magistrats qui ont siégé dans un tribunal sur un dossier politique, cette fois sur Sarkozy. Le silence du garde des Sceaux est éloquent. C'est dire l'état de la démocratie en France..

COUR D’APPEL DE PARIS MINISTERE DE LA JUSTICE Premiere présidence Liberté Egalité Fraternité COMMUNIQUE DE PRESSE Paris, le 27 septembre 2025 Jugement du tribunal judiciaire de Paris du 25 septembre 2025 dans le dossier dit du financement libyen. Le premier président de la cour d’appel de Paris exprime sa vive inquiétude a la suite de la diffusion sur les réseaux sociaux de messages contenant des attaques personnelles et des menaces de mort visant les magistrats composant le tribunal correctionnel ayant statué sur le dossier dit du financement lybien. Il déplore également la remise en cause de leur impartialité visant a jeter le discrédit sur la décision rendue. Il rappelle que la voie légale de contestation de I'impartialité d'un magistrat, ouverte a toute partie jusqu’au prononcé du jugement, est la procédure de récusation prévue par les articles 668 et suivants du code de procédure pénale. La mise en cause de I'impartialité d'un magistrat ne peut intervenir a posteriori pour discréditer une décision de justice rendue collégialement, aprés des débats contradictoires. Aprés le prononcé d'un jugement, la voie de contestation ouverte aux parties est l'appel. Dans un Etat de droit démocratique, la critique d'une décision de justice ne peut en aucun cas s'exprimer par des menaces formulées a I'égard des magistrats. Le premier président appelle solennellement au respect de I'institution judiciaire et de son indépendance, garanties essentielles de I'Etat de droit.

With Mozilla's shutting down (articles are already unavailable, exports can be retrieved through 8 October 2025, see: web.archive.org/web/2025092720), I've exported the list of URLs I'd logged with the service.

One of my longstanding gripes was that there was no way for me to get a total of the articles I'd saved.

(There ... were other gripes.)

I now know: 30,735.

In an ideal world, this would have been a useful library of references. I'd tagged many of these (including, eventually, adopting a convention of tagging by archive date which Pocket surely must've known somewhere in its data schema, but petulantly hid from its users), through a loose but somewhat controlled vocabulary influenced in part by both my general interests and some familiarity with existing library ontologies, classifications, and subject headings.

I'm kicking around what to do with this archive. One question of course is how many of the links have since rotted (I suspect a high percentage). I've got a few leads on readability-rendering (including a bash script invoking JS ... somehow ... I've got to look at). Tracking down archived copies, and spinning up a media server, would also be handy.
