Reading Home Cultures Through Books by Kirsti Salmi-Niklander, 2022

This wide-ranging, comparative, and multidisciplinary collection addresses the significance of books in creating the idea of home. The chapters present cases that reveal the affective and sensory dimensions of books and reading in the practice of everyday life of individuals, in communities, and in society.



The complex relationship of books, reading, and home is explored through American and European case studies both in bourgeois and middle-class homes, and in working-class and immigrant families and communities with limited possibilities for reading. The volume combines the conceptions and representations of domesticity, the materiality of reading, and library as a place, drawing on book history and material culture studies as well as anthropology and sociology of the home.

Honour Killings amongst Turks in the Netherlands

Honour killings are murders that are carried out to purify tarnished honour, the honour in question being namus. Both men and women possess namus. For women and girls, namus means chastity, while for men it means having chaste female family members.

Honour killing is a widely known phenomenon in Turkey, where the Hürriyet newspaper reports an average of six such killings a month. As a result of migration since the 1960s and 1970s, we also encounter it in Western Europe (the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Sweden and Denmark). This study examines in detail 20 cases of honour killing by Turks in the Netherlands. Particular attention is given to the social factors that play a role in the decision to commit a honour killing.

La sociologie de l’alimentation, sans doute parce qu’elle a été longtemps structurée autour des questions de goût, de territoire, de patrimoine et qu’elle explore la question de la commensalité, a privilégié dans sa problématisation de l’acte alimentaire la ligne directrice de la continuité.

Aussi, en proposant dans cet ouvrage collectif de soumettre l’alimentation au cadre d’analyse de la promesse, nous souhaitions opérer un pas de côté problématique susceptible de mieux rendre compte de l’articulation entre le temps long de l’histoire de l’alimentation, sa dimension anthropologique et les effets de rupture engendrés par certaines promesses. L’objectif était double : d’une part interroger le caractère novateur des promesses alimentaires et donc de saisir leurs conditions d’émergence, de circulation et de transformation ; d’autre part, comprendre ce que les mangeurs en font concrètement au quotidien : les adoptent-ils ? les rejettent-ils ? les bricolent-ils ? Ont ainsi été rassemblées neuf contributions issues d’enquêtes de sciences sociales et d’histoire, à dominante ethnographique, richement illustrées et réalisées sur trois continents. Les promesses décryptées ici s’arriment à des produits (pain, probiotiques, compléments alimentaires), à des pratiques (les régimes « sans », le mouvement « zéro déchet ») et à des enjeux (l’autonomie alimentaire des villes, l’alimentation en fin de vie, la malnutrition infantile et l’aide alimentaire). En cela, l’ouvrage s’adresse aux étudiants, enseignants, chercheurs et autres professionnels intéressés par l’alimentation contemporaine et ses dimensions sociale, politique, nutritionnelle et écologique.

「差別を止めろ」という言葉から想起できる色々が、確かにその言葉を観る人間のバックボーン次第で変わる。
勿論小学生の（物心つく）頃から「差別は止めろ」なんだけど、中二病罹患期は「はん。差別心は無くならんし、人間は差別が大好きなんだ！ムリムリ」とかに振れたり。
それでも、朝鮮高校の女子生徒さんのチマチョゴリが切られたとか、あと朝鮮高校の生徒さんだからってんでちびっとやらかしただけで徹底的に叩かれる（他の公立私立の高校生徒が似たようなことやらかしても「注意してね」で終わるのに）みたいな状況があるとか、クルド人の子供が出てけと言われ暴行受けたニュースに接したあととか、入管から酷い目にあわされた人の状況の詳細なルポを読んだあととか、あと在日の方々の日本国籍持っていないからこその苦難とか日本に帰化しても苦難に遭われてるとか、そういうのに触れたときは「何とかならんのか」じゃ甘くて「これは何とかしないとだめだ」になる。

それをマジョリティ側が一人でも多く自分事にすると本当に「差別は止めろ」が力を持つことになるよなあ。
