What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Had some pretty extensive implementation ideas in my head for a Tapestry feature for months now. Was excited to finally get started on it.

Woke up feeling like all the ideas are sus and will be a disaster.

My brain isn't playing fair here.

Second and even more exciting for me! I am introducing a new app—in beta for now—for creative content gathering and writing called Atlas!

I’ve been musing about TextKit for a while and this is why! It is primarily a Markdown editor and freeform canvas app that supports Mac and iOS. It’s still a bit rough as I tighten up the bolts, but stable enough that I am ready for testers!

Feature Deets: contagious.dev/product/atlas/ and beta link: testflight.apple.com/join/gUA8

Martin 1.0 is out! Sweet. Been using Martin off and on for vector tile projects. Adheres to "Simple things should be simple, complex things should be possible" adage. I also like it because it was named after me :D @nyurikYuri Astrakhan thanks for all your work on this. github.com/maplibre/martin/rel

I understand the counterargument, and (frankly, unfortunately) the counterargument is well-supported by the numbers. Approximately nobody does this or anything like it. Ignoring the hackernews crowd is a high-percentage decision, and I not-so-secretly believe that the real reason that a lot (not all but a lot) of that crowd's protracted animus towards telemetry has nothing to do with privacy and everything to do with the fact that telemetry produces evidence their opinions don't matter.

But... at some point there's a threshold; at some point an edge case becomes a leading-edge case.

This was one of the core lessons I learned working with the Flow team - any one absolute number won't show what you want, you have to be able to see motion and context.

Back in the day at a previous gig I tried and largely failed to convince anyone that sudden upswings in people sharing detailed instructions about screwing around in the guts of the product should be treated the same way sudden upswings in crash rates: a capital-I Incident that deserves near term attention and careful retrospective investigation.

What is this, if not a user expectation going so badly unmet that people are _happy_ to risk bricking their box to fix it?

Congress Tickets

We're building something for the Fediverse.

ActivityPub running on your phone. Your own server, your data stored locally. A relay handles your stable identity when you're offline.

One account, all formats. Short text, long articles, photos, videos. The UI adapts to your mood. Switch between text mode, photo grid, video feed, article editor based on what you feel like sharing.

Same network, same followers.

Early stages, but the foundation is solid. We wanted to share the progress.
