I've talked about it before but Attention K-Mart Shoppers is such an incredible thing, a collection of overhead department store music from a forgotten era archive.org/details/attentionk

My favorite thing is still the opening track from the October 1989 tape. The synths! The distortion! The yearning calls of the instruments! The piano! archive.org/details/KmartOctob

There are so many good tapes though

Scientists Have Discovered a Special Type of Immune Cell That Slows Aging

Researchers have just discovered a way to destroy harmful 'senescent' cells that accumulate with age and ramp up the kind of tissue damage and inflammation that slowly brings life to a grinding halt.

The team found that CD4 T immune cells transform into assassins of the damaging tissues when biological aging is detected in the body.

A thing I don't like about Signal is that in principle if someone messages you by username they can't get your phone number, but the interface doesn't indicate at all. Meanwhile, if you get cold called by someone it doesn't tell you if they messaged by username or by phone number, and it's not clear by pressing "Accept" whether or not you're transmitting to them your username (if they messaged by phone#) or the phone# (if they messaged by username)… or how to prevent this.

@mcc I don't think you can prevent somebody automatically receiving your profile name if they call your number.

I poked around this part of the docs while wondering whether to push my parents over to that service.

Playtime

Nobody is quite sure why bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales choose each other's company. Perhaps they find food more easily, or the large pods provide safety.

All I know is that one beautiful day in September, they followed our boat for half an hour as we were whale-watching.

They were leaping through the water of Skjálfandi bay with joy, and just because they could. What more reason could they need?

Húsavík, NE .

A colour photo of a stretch of sea under a clear sky with fluffy clouds. A range of mountains is in the distance, dropping to the coastline. In the centre of the shot is a group of dolphins and whales, the dolphins in the lead. Several of the sleek bodies can be seen above the water as they are leaping.

Martin 1.0 is out! Sweet. Been using Martin off and on for vector tile projects. Adheres to "Simple things should be simple, complex things should be possible" adage. I also like it because it was named after me :D @nyurikYuri Astrakhan thanks for all your work on this. github.com/maplibre/martin/rel

A lot of the ActivityPub spec was edited to that tape. I was selected for the Stripe Open Source Retreat; basically they gave a stipend and a space to work out of in San Francisco. It was kind of a neat program, an "open source artist in residence" program. I originally got the position to work on MediaGoblin, but ended up spending the time working on the ActivityPub spec and packaging MediaGoblin's dependencies for Guix instead

On weekends I would blast these tapes in the empty office and work

Do you know of a community that could use their own Federated mapping server? Please DM me.

In six weeks, I've made TONS of progress on Atlas Maps, and I'm confident with real people using it in the field.

atlasdemo.emissary.social

So I spent this morning reaching out to a handful of integrators and consultants, but I can't find everyone.

Please help me reach out to the activists, builders, and organizers you know who need to map local events in their communities.

Who should I contact next?

I forgot how tedious it is to chase code coverage when writing tests.

However this was part of the reason that made me include the "boring" parts of building a robust library into the goals set for the grant.

So after a couple of days of work I finally got the first of the storage backends for the library go past 80% test coverage.

I hope I can reuse some of the test logic in the other backends, as they need to perform identically.
