Firefox 145.0.1 added Perplexity to my list of search engines, which I keep very small (only google ddg and wikipedia), without asking, despite my having set browser.ml.enable and browser.ml.chat.enabled false. They clearly have not spared a moment's thought for inferring user preferences on this, and we now know they have an incentive to ignore user preferences on this to goose their newly chosen success metrics.
A couple more changes like this and I'm out. After 22.5 years.

Seeing this Xmas decorations at St Pan gave me an overwhelming nostalgia in the old times I missed...I did not have a mobile phone until 2002, I did not have my own laptop until 2007 and not owned a smart phone until 2014, I have not yet used any LLM bot for my work for private life. I am one of those people who are quite slow on tech . I miss old tech: reading paper newspaper and magazine and liner TV.

I want this fast moving world to just stop! stop!

Trump’s Dept of Education saw the US nursing shortage and said “How can we help make this worse”, and then they did.

Dept of Ed has reclassified nursing degrees so they are no longer considered professional degrees. This functionally means that the loan caps for nursing students are much lower.

You know what the US needs? Barriers to people going into nursing. /S

Something happened to me recently, and I don't mean to be dramatic, but it's truly a shameful thing.
Two days ago, I joined the writing platform & even though @aralAral Balkan & @fabioFabio Manganiello told me it wasn't a good platform for me, being Palestinian, I decided to interact on it and post my poems there.
I was subjected to awful abuse in all verbal forms by Zionists there.
But I preferred to remain silent instead of arguing with any fools.
Today, the platform’s banned me!

This is very early in our relationship. We had moved in as roommates after leaving very unhealthy marriages. We did not remain in our own rooms long.

We've barely left each other's sides since. We've traveled the world. We are so lucky to have found each other.

@alice🅰🅻🅸🅲🅴 (🌈🦄) made a downright AMAZING post about the perils of open registration a while ago, and I suggest you go show them some attention. But some of the discussion on that post got me thinking. The main reason people don't want manual account approval, it seems, is because of the time it takes. So, I propose a third registration mode. This would require no extra modifications to ActivityPub and perhaps one minor tweak to nodeinfo (1/?)

Vibe coded my first complete application for my Mac last night.

I wanted to read some comic strips from scans of a magazine in standalone book form. (Dragon - I even have the legal [1] CD-ROM archive.)

The TOC in the PDFs isn't 100% usable for this. So the generated app brings up a UI that displays the page where the TOC says the strip is and allows me to select the actual pages and then it builds a standalone compilation of the strip using waifu2x to upres the colour scans. Result looks great.

As a side effect I learnt how to build a customised PDF viewer in MacOS (super-easy!) and also got some idea of the kinds of internal structures used in magazine scans. It wasn't completely trivial - I started on the wrong foot with excessive amounts of completely unneeded rasterization of vector graphics. I wrote zero lines of code myself, just pasted ChatGPT's suggestions into my editor.

[1] Well WoTC themselves did have to deal with a lawsuit because they didn't have the right to redistribute their own magazine electronically.
