What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

No ads.
No* algorithm.
No tracking.
No influence campaigns.
No AI.
No face scanning.
No bots.

Just people on the internet talking to each other about all the little pointless things, (and big incredible things) in our lives.

*I realize that the demonization of the term "algorithm" in social media is unfortunate in many ways. The demonization of the words "social media" itself is also missing the point. But this is about a simple take on what I think a lot of people are looking for right now.

We (Microslug), together with our intimate circle of 940 critically important partners (because who doesn’t need nearly a thousand companies involved in their email?) proudly process your data so we can: stash information on your device, “enhance” products in ways you’ll never notice, tailor ads with unsettling accuracy, measure how many ads you didn’t click, extract audience insights worthy of a surveillance thesis, pinpoint your exact geolocation down to the square inch, and identify you via device scanning (don’t worry, that’s just modern life).

Some third parties may process your data based on their “legitimate interest,” a magical phrase that apparently grants unlimited powers if you squint hard enough. You may, hypothetically, exercise your right to consent or object whenever your courage permits by selecting Manage preferences or spelunking through Outlook settings (bring snacks).

By clicking Accept all, you enthusiastically agree to all of this the tracking, the profiling, the location grabbing, the “anonymized-but-not-really” data sharing, the endless cross-device fingerprinting digitally signing your digital soul over to 940 strangers.

There is something about klayout that makes my monitor have very visible HDMI bit errors at 4K60 but only when my desktop is in light mode so I can read the text in the inspector view on OpenRoad. Cursed

@GrapheneOS is being threatened by French authorities for refusing to add backdoors and they're dealing with coordinated attacks in French media right now. They're pulling out of France entirely, moving all their servers, and fighting off a wave of bullshit one-sided reporting that makes them look like they're helping criminals.

They need us to fight back. Support them however you can, whether that's a dollar, sharing their story, pushing back on the garbage news coverage when you see it, or just telling someone you know about what's happening. All of it matters because they're drowning in attacks from governments and media and bad actors who want them gone.

This is the only Android OS that actually makes me feel like privacy isn't just marketing. They fight for us now they need us to fight for them.

The EU is pushing Chat Control and creating an environment where governments feel empowered to threaten developers into compliance, and if we stay quiet we're letting it happen. Show up for them in whatever way you're able to.

Toot v26.0 has been released!

toot.to/

This long-awaited update brings a UI refresh for iOS 26, and support for quote toots. Also, even device on older iOS versions get some of the UI improvements. There are many other smaller improvements and bug fixes as well, such as better support for filters. There might even be new mystery features?

A big thanks to everyone who helped out to beta test this release. Thanks to them, it is far more stable than it would have otherwise been!

Ah, somehow I missed that Wikipedia no longer redirects to their mobile version of the site when you're visiting it on your phone?

New post from me over on the @spritelyThe Spritely Institute blog: Composing capability security and conflict-free replicated data types

Local-first apps often use CRDTs, but I'm not really aware of any that fully embrace capability security. This post is an attempt to show how the two can be composed using a simple group chat application as a case study.

It was great meeting so many HPC folks from around the world last week at in my hometown, St. Louis!

I captured some of the highlights, like the @EPCC 'Wee Archie', from my first Supercomputing experience in today's Level 2 Jeff video: youtube.com/watch?v=wjP721KCDJI
