What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

And then in response to that, someone pointed out what happened: a repost on the post I was replying to. And that all tracks. I never said (nor do I believe) anything like “all anti ai comments are bots.” I was talking about a very specific instance of a behavior I saw in the moment

So I got a new box today.

Plan on installing FreeBSD and I think I want to give it a shot to pkg base.

Do you recommend installing the latest 15 release candidate and upgrading from there this Friday?.

Or is still better to install latest 14.X and do a major upgrade to 15 on Friday?

Oh my, the modern web is so bloated/overloaded.
My Thinkpad x260 (Yoga) is dying while playing a Youtube video... let alone dropping a lot of frames.
I know, the CPU is older (i5-6200U) but come on - this is crazy.

I've set the notebook up to play around with on the desktop some more. Running currently and having some dev stuff installed.
handles the notebook like a champ, everything works... sadly that is not the same for using the web with a modern browser.
720p playbook loads up the CPU at a constant 50/60%.
Well, at least surfing the web is kinda ok... but not great tbh.

Times really have changed... for the worse in some aspects.
I still remember surfing the web back than with a tiny AMD single core CPU - which was more then enough.

Enough ranting.

there's a non-zero chance that if you're here, then you're probably your family's go-to guy. or gal. for just about anything with a computer in it or related to it.

@todbTod Beardsley 🤘 has a nice toot about some stuff you want to check when you forced into the tech support role over here:

to add to that, for security awareness month, I wrote up some things about IoT security. You know. Those internet enabled things in your home including your routers, printers, network attached devices and everything else in between.

If anybody is interested, using Fediverse Observer I just pulled this - Mastodon servers, filtered by Active Users.

While, yes, mastodon.social does have over half the users - I do think the situation isn't as bad as people make out, Mastodon itself would continue to function without the main server (far less so without the foundation behind it).

I'm sorry I'm not trying to turn Thanksgiving 2025 into Thanksgiving: The Gender Controversy, but this "oh, you have to be in the far upper right tail of the math ability distribution to go into engineering" is laughable on its face as soon as you look at real assessment data at scale

Men at lower-scoring tiers of engineering/math/science majors enjoy THE SAME EARNINGS BENEFITS as men at the upper tiers and women do not!

Again: flashing neon light pointing to "social effects"

Oben steht in weißer Schrift „STOP #CHATCONTROL!“ und darunter die Frage „IS YOUR GOVERNMENT OPPOSING IT YET?“ (Ist deine Regierung schon dagegen?).

Ontario Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment gets provincial approval. Extends life by 38 years.

If you’re within 10 km of Pickering or Darlington nuclear generating stations, you should have Potassium Iodide (KI) tablets. Anyone within 50 km is encouraged to have KI tablets, including areas of GTA.

This is how you do it people. I feel like I could have written this article, as it is extremely detailed as to all of the valid reasons why they would want to ban such content from being associated with Nature.

Every journalistic & creative outlet you follow should be publishing something like this…and if not, demand it.

RE: wandering.shop/@aesthr/1156150

Imagine letting your whole worldview, how you learn about anything, get filtered through a silent corporate-brand-sanitization machine.

Banning books seems adorably quaint by comparison. Your brain would end up as polished and smooth as the inside of a urinal.

The sticker sheets are back in stock today! And the first 321 orders have been dispatched, with the rest coming soon. Only about 400 plushies left between the two colors. The winter mug is the closest to being sold out at only 18 units left. Thank you!

"As doubts about AI creep in, I’m hearing growing chatter to the effect that the Fed can and should save the industry. But the lesson from the last big tech bubble is that it can’t. In fact, I have doubts about whether the Fed can head off a broader recession if the tech boom collapses — but that’s a topic for a future post."

Random memory: Loren Brichter once nonchalantly told me “oh, it can just be put together with the parts” about a UITabBar-based UI he built in Tweetie 2 after I had the chance to ask (it seemed so novel to me at the time ha!)

That changed my world. It helped me look at constructing UIs in a completely different way that made anything possible. Hell, that was one of two foundational things someone has said to me that’s made me a great programmer today. And I doubt he even remembers! 😂
