What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

A day in the life of a tech book writer.....

I'm currently updating the Production chapter in Django for Professionals. Quite a bit of newness but of course I focus on the opening paragraphs first. Look at the old version, hate it, spend 3 hours writing something else. Get lunch, return and read both. Go, old version wasn't so bad after all. Ultimate version will probably be 70/30 old versus new.

This is how updates go for me at least ๐Ÿ˜€

HEY CANADA.

MP Elizabeth May is sponsoring a petition to get Electoral Reform back in front of Parliament.

Could all of us who were utterly betrayed in 2016 when JT reneged on this please go put our electrons onto this one? yes, yes, the petitions don't mean a thing WILL happen, but there was already a good plan for this set out that got shelved. The longer we delay, the longer we risk what's happening in the US happening here.

"We think this is a pretty revolutionary development, especially in an era when AI is forcing computer memory prices higher and higher โ€“ some sources suggest memory has increased in price by 500%! If we can adapt computer memory demands, both RAM and storage, to sausage-based media, then every deli in America has the opportunity to become a data center! Every sandwich becomes removable storage! Supermarkets full of cold cuts and sausages and charcuterie could be tasked to data storage on demand!"

Tell your MP to attend the debate on

Nearly 3 million people signed the petition โ€˜Do not introduce Digital ID cardsโ€™ .

The government, however, is pushing ahead regardless of public concern. Democracy?

The government is at risk of creating a digital infrastructure that will fundamentally change how we live. What begins as an ID card could quickly expand into a system where we are forced to prove who we are as we go about our daily lives.

[1/2]

Image with text on the left side stating:

"Say no to Digital ID."

To the right are two, yellow, cow ear tags. Around the hole where it's attached to the cow's ear are the letters "UK" and then mimicking binary code with a series of 1's and 0's.

On the main area of the tag is, from the top:

A royal crown with the letters "UK" to the right.
Next line has a random 6 digit number (as seen on cow ear tags).

Last line is:

"GBR < DIGITAL < ID"

And itโ€™s a wrap for the Social Media Strategies track at ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

Iโ€™m INCREDIBLY grateful to @morloi for giving us an opportunity to talk about the on the main stage.

And it was so cool to finally meet @niccoloveNiccolรฒ Venerandi IRL. Heโ€™s so inspiring!

I hope we piqued the curiosity of people in the audience. About 1 out of 100 people had previously heard about the fediverse!

Yโ€™all gotta see this. A radio station in Minneapolis is stuck on an endless loop. Itโ€™s playing the last part of โ€œA Lot More Freeโ€. Going on 2 hours now.

This is magic.

Edit: unfortunately it now has been fixed, but I have big feelings about finding such Art in an automated music dispenser breaking.

You might think it's not a priority with all the doom happening around.

But the erosion of privacy rights is directly linked to the erosion of human rights, and the loss of democracy.

Privacy makes it safe for you to discuss, to organize, to resist, and to be your true self. This is exactly why fascists and authoritarians are attacking it.

If we lose privacy, we lose everything else. We have to defend it with all we've got.

Privacy rights are a priority.

@Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified:

Privacy has been an essential pillar of democratic society, even all the way back to Pericles' funeral speech:

"The freedom we enjoy in our government extends also to our ordinary life. There, far from exercising a jealous surveillance over each other, we do not feel called upon to be angry with our neighbour for doing what he likes..."

I know everyone has different ethics, etc and some companies are harder to boycott than others but I think "has the owner of this video game company literally ordered someone to be killed" is a good reason to not buy EA's video games or for people to review them if Saudi Arabia is going to be the new owner

> According to Santa Ragione, Epic informed the developers that they won't distribute Horses about 24 hours before release, and denied a subsequent appeal 12 hours later.

Jesus fuckin Christ lmao, Tim Sweeney please dive head-first into a sewer

Epic ban Santa Ragione's Horses just before release, allegedly with a weird reminder that NFT games are fine though
