What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I hate the "cattle vs. pets" framing of managing larger clusters of computers with automation, implying that managing small clusters or single machines is done manually.

I hate it because managing a single machine without a framework suitable for automation has been generally poor practice *forever*.

But I hate it even more because the foundation of the metaphor is that it is OK and normal to treat livestock without compassion or care. It is quite simply not.

Retire that framing, please.

New, by me: Fintech firm Marquis is alerting dozens of U.S. banks and credit unions after an August ransomware attack let hackers steal reams of customers' personal information and financial data, including their Social Security numbers.

Marquis allows financial institutions to "centralize all customer or member data in one place," and as such handles large amounts of bank customers' data.

At least 400,000 people known to be affected so far and likely to rise.

I get an SNS topic notification of occasions to my email. Itโ€™s all JSON and I should probably send it somewhere else, but itโ€™s SO occasional that Iโ€™ve not got round to it. Iโ€™ve learnt to parse the JSON for the relevant bit by eye.

The Apple Intelligence preview has also learnt to parse it, it turns out. The inbox preview is now showing exactly the relevant information, and I have to admit to being quietly delighted. Itโ€™s my standout best thing about all this recent hoo-ha by a good long way.

More and more features for employer control of phones just means more and more reasons that employers HAVE to supply you a work phone as NO ONE should submit to this on their own phone and the employer control overreach and surveillance just makes the case stronger.

I remember when Amazon rolled out needing to opt into employer control for gaining access to work emails on phone which would include remote wipe, and so I just then didn't have work emails on my phone, and life was better actually.
