So, I need to order a Debian-compatible laptop to arrive in Italy very soon (like next week or early the week after that). Two 2TB SSD drives (we're setting up RAID 1 mirroring), 64 GB RAM, a good GPU (it will be used for some graphics-intensive applications), and solidly built (it will soon be in Egypt and used in desert conditions).

If it has Debian GNU/Linux pre-installed, that would be amazing! But if not, we can install the OS -- we just need to know that the laptop is 100% Debian-compatible and that we're not going to run into any installation issues.

Anyone have recommendations for where to order from?

(I know about System76 and have had great experiences with them before, so they're already on the list. Their shipping page indicates that maybe they can meet the "must arrive in Italy very soon" requirement, but I'm trying to gather options right now.)

Heavy thunderstorm day, so rewatching 'Bedazzled' for the first time since forever, probably decades. And a few dated early 2000's product-of-its-time elements aside, it's still a fun casual watch, with an actually solid message by the end.

Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil remains iconic in every scene, and Brendan Fraser's sensitive, awkward nerd vibe continues to occupy a soft spot in my heart.

Side shot of the PC monitor showing an instance from the film Bedazzled with Elziabeth Hurley's Devil character charmingly staring towards a sad and confused Brendan Fraser. My two cats are visible lounging on their cushions on the side of the desk. My tuxedo cat Tiffie has nearly fallen asleep while my calico cat Carrie is curiously staring at the screen.

Yesterday’s event demonstrated that investing in the individuals who perform essential maintenance work is a practical lever for increasing the resilience of the digital systems we all depend on.

I just learned this week about the Global PyLadies Conference—happening virtually this Fri & Sat Dec 5th and 6th.

And Dawn Wages @BajoranEngineerdawn is one of the keynoters!

And Dingding Lu + Gauri Kasar (who I know from the Postgres team on Azure) are teaching a 1.5 hour workshop titled "Build Agentic AI with Semantic Kernel and Graph RAG on PostgreSQL" (on Sat Dec 6th at 10am PST)

I suppose it's not a surprise to see at a conference!

If you're just learning about this PyLadies conference, check out the schedule! And here is the link to Dingding and Gauri's workshop re Postgres: pretalx.com/pyladiescon-2025/t

“If everyone who streamed All Hell on Spotify had done so using Tidal instead, we would have received an extra £31,847.38, which would double the amount we made from streaming of the album in this time period. Or if everyone used Apple Music it would have been £12,331 more.”

Los Campesinos! break down streaming royalties. In other news, Fuck Spotify.

There were two especially bizarre claims in the Techrights case:

1) I had conspired with someone else to launch an associated claim (by which he means someone else who felt Roy had defamed him asked me who my solicitors were and I told them) and the two cases should be merged
2) My legal fees were being paid by someone else (heavily implied to be either Microsoft or someone associated with Microsoft), which would have been nice if true because I'd be able to afford a very nice time off work now

The last month of my life: BreakingTTAPs

This is a custom transport-triggered, 32 bit processor that will be fabricated by GlobalFoundries on their 180nm process (via of wafer.space)

I'll make a video at some point, but some high level details here.

- Transport-triggered architecture
- ~20Mhz
- Two 32 bit data buses (i.e. two instructions per cycle)
- 1024 double slot instruction memory
- 256 word stack
- 4kb of general RAM
- 80 or so various instruction types
- 16 GPIO, SPI, UART, 8 bit parallel memory loader interface

Clock speed is sorta up in the air. Still optimizing, but simulations say it should hit ~20MHz in all "process corners" (i.e. if the fab makes slow transistors and the chip is 125C hot). Probably faster in nominal case but we'll see

Instruction set is pretty standard set of ALU, LSU, comparisons, branching, bit manip, etc. But I snuck in a few fun extras like a pseudorandom number generator, tanh and multiply-and-accumulate to try some light ML inference (rough plan is reservoir computing)

Chip was written in Spade HDL (spade-lang.org), which transpiles down to SystemVerilog. That's then fed into a LibreLane build process that turns the verilog into transistors. All open source!

Few tweaks left before the final deadline. Then it's off to the fab and we'll see if it works in three months!

Really hope there isn't a bug in the memory loader, otherwise it'll be DOA and not much to do about it. But even so, was a great learning experience!
