What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

One thing about "AI" is with the technology OpenAI has (large neural network plus manual tagging) you could've made the best search engine ever. There could be a Copilot where you describe what you wanted and it finds an example of it in the corpus of open source software. You could go from a fuzzy image description to a stock image. These would be better than buggy code and fucked up images. But they wouldn't do that because the *service* OpenAI provides is obscuring that the content is stolen.

Taking Notes for Social Web CG taskforce meetings

Emelia @thisismissem@activitypub.space

<p>Hi all,</p> <p>I've recently had some questions about what tool to use for note taking during taskforce meetings, personally I've been using hedgedoc from <a href="http://social.coop/" rel="nofollow ugc">social.coop</a>, but it's a private instance and you need an invited account. I've also used hackmd in the past. I've seen other taskforces use Google Docs, and I think one even used CryptPad.</p> <p>Officially the W3C way of scribing meetings is via an IRC bot: <a href="https://www.w3.org/2006/tools/wiki/WebExBestPractices#Meeting_Record_(Minutes)" rel="nofollow ugc">https://www.w3.org/2006/tools/wiki/WebExBestPractices#Meeting_Record_(Minutes)</a></p>

i've been roped into writing mods for europa unversalis 5. you might remember posting a thread about this game's engine a few days ago.

this game is really easy to mod! there's an incredible jetbrains plugin that -- no joke -- is better thought out and designed than plugins for some actual programming languages i've used before. for a video game about clicking on maps.

however, i've just discovered something a bit cursed: the game wants you to save all mod files in microsoft's awful UTF-8 with BOM encoding. if you don't, the game will complain about it, but load it anyway.

i'm gonna have to BOMify all the files, because i foresee a dark future where not doing so causes a subtle bug that i spend hours debugging.

Today was the first time I had to deal with from a colleague. His task was to write a narrative final report for a small production grant that I received and he managed. He produced something that I'd be embarrassed to present, so I spent the past 3 hours rewriting it.

I'm reminded of what I heard @emilymbenderProf. Emily M. Bender(she/her) say: the only use of AI is to indicate resource constraints in your org. This person lost his father recently, so he used AI to produce the report because he was stressed.

This instance seems to use some entirely new software, which is kinda cool in theory, but it federates pretty badly. The user interface also has some annoying bugs, notably the timeline refreshing throws out whatever you were writing in the input box, so I've had to compose this in a fucking text editor.

The thing you probably care a bit more about is that it doesn't have any real verification beyond a captcha. No email, no manual verification.

Second, there's an in-between kind of audience -- a set of people that I don't know personally, but that I trust some smart moderators have vetted. Bike lovers, Montreal Open Source fans, ActivityPub developers. Sometimes you want to talk to "people like us", vaguely defined. Facebook Groups work like this, for instance; well-managed mailing lists and chat groups work this way, too. My hope is that the work that we're doing for groups in the SocialCG will help with this: github.com/swicg/groups

Finally, there's that extra step of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) that protects the content even from your (and their) server operator. I think the current work on bringing MLS to ActivityPub will help with that a lot. github.com/swicg/activitypub-e
