A 400ml bottle of dishwasher rinse aid costs £3.50 in my local ASDA. I buy a 5ltr bottle off the internet for £10.50, saving myself £33.25. I am 50 years old and this represents the culmination of my long term financial investment strategy.

So we’ve just had a rumor that Tim Cook might be leaving Apple soon, hastily corrected to “but he’ll stay on as board chair,” followed soon after by reports that no, everyone relax, he‘s not going anywhere, and now lots of folks right below him on the org chart are heading for the door instead.

Tim, I’m begging you. Read the rapidly emptying room.

RFK Jr.'s claim that COVID vaccines are deadly? Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. In this new extraordinarily large study, vaccinated individuals had a 74% lower risk of death from severe COVID-19 and a 25% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who were unvaccinated. RFK Jr. is. liar and a fraud, as are Vinay Prasad and Tracy Hoeg at FDA who have made similar false claims about these vaccines. jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman

Why do the wise guys over at the orange site keep feeling the need to say that is dead and that Raku killed it? Sometimes there's also a mocking jibe at Raku as well.

"Live, and let live" people!🤦🏽‍♂️

My motto for 2026 is going to be:

"Use things that people love to dunk on".

This includes things like Raku, Common Lisp, Emacs, Perl, C, OpenBSD...

As a queer person, I sometimes think about cis straight people I know back home (Singapore) who truly think I had no reason to leave home. Even though my country doesn't recognize my marriage, even though there are no immigration benefits that accrue to my foreign same sex spouse, even though there are no anti-discrimination laws that exist to protect me, they think, I can still have a pretty good life as an out queer person. I can have money, and no one is actively wanting to beat me up or hurt me.

That's the problem.

The problem isn't the bigots (because at least I know what to expect), it's the people who think they are not bigots, who believe that I should be thankful and grateful because 'at least nobody is going to beat me up'.

Nobody will beat me up because I have middle class Chinese and cis privilege in that society. It's not the same for other people. It's not because I am accepted or tolerated. Also, that is a tremendously low bar. I expect more of my life. I expect to thrive, not just be grateful to survive.

Just finished 'git commit murder'. Such a fun! Recommended!

When I read all those delightful Agatha Christie's books, there were always things that didn't make sense for a young South American boy *... Now an adult, reading a story where all the nerd stuff makes sense was fantastic!

Now it's time to get back to serious stuff: 'SSH Mastery'.

* 'meat pudding'?

Apparently Threads has also implemented a post quote feature.

I say “apparently” because posts seen through fedi-link only have “RE:” followed by *absolutely nothing*, but if you use the Threads app and open the same post, it has the expected embedded (quoted) post.

Not sure where the breakdown is, but I’m betting that Threads is not using the same APIs as native Mastodon instances.

Driving me nuts, but getting those folks to abandon Threads for a true Mastodon instance just won’t happen: “but my followers!”

There was no real market rationale for including AI in Calibre. It's not like people were going to switch to a competitor if it didn't have AI integration, because Calibre effectively has no competitors. It's the one name that always crops up when you ask how to do something even moderately complicated with ebooks. And now people are actively looking for alternatives.

Anyone looking at the US news with increasing horror as it starts firming up the US is going Full Fascist Forward?

And yeah, to my fellow Canadians, you all saw that bit where the new US military strategic planning will shift to "combat operations in the Western Hemisphere" away from competing power blocs.

That is us those are for. Go on. Tell me I'm wrong. It ain't just Venezuelan oil and water on the menu.

They mean to slaughter us. We are nothing to them but resources and possible chattel.

In the Starfleet Technical Manual, there is a throwaway detail of the LCARS user interface that when it is upgraded, users can still utilize the previous several versions. This is because their work is mission-critical and it is unacceptable to compromise the mission by forcing unfamiliar changes; eventual retraining is part of their job, but the flexibility allows them to take the retraining at their own pace.

I think about this from time-to-time and how this is still a sci-fi idea that is seen all too rarely in how we do actual computer UIs.

How UI degrades over time.

Top (Windows 95): great contrast, obvious shapes. Instantly readable.

Middle (Windows 11): shapes are still self-explanatory, but contrast is gone.

Bottom (Windows 11 Insiders): what am I even looking at? The only shape I can understand here is the Run button. Barely visible, though.

Then, on the left, there’s another something that says Run and has an icon. What is it? A window title? Another button? Why does it have to say Run twice?

@silverpill I had to dig around in the code to find the extra_supported_types configuration option:

# Limits
limits:
  media:
    extra_supported_types: ["application/pdf"]
# file_size_limit: 20M
# emoji_size_limit: 500K
  posts:
    character_limit: 10000

and was thinking of doing a PR on the docs, but I'm not sure where it would fit

👨‍💻 Hallihallo. Kurz was in eigener Sache.
