かつて平安初期にもっづ氏のご先祖にあたるもふもふな猫さんがおってな、
あまりにももふもふなものですから宮中では大変な人気だったそうな。

当時はその猫を「毛太（もうふ）」と呼んで可愛がっておったんじゃが、後世の書写で「太」を「不」に誤写されてしまってな。
結果として漢字は「毛不」となり読みは変わらず「もふ」のまま、時代が下くだっていたんじゃ。

後代の人々は「不＝ない」から“毛にあらずほどの毛並み”と解釈して、そこから「もふもふ」が成立したんしゃよ

だから片仮名の語源の「毛」「不」はそのまま「モフ」、これを1字にした「ﾓﾌ」は「もふもふな猫さん」を意味する漢字になったんじゃな。
