The U.S. State Dept. font story is pretty silly, but I do like that it gives the broader public a chance to learn more about a craft they encounter every day. Here’s the designer of Calibri, Luc(as) de Groot, on CNN talking parameters, spindly serifs, and the origin of Times! video.snapstream.net/Play/2UPc

(Thanks to Volker Rosenfelder, my FontShop colleague, for sending this along.)

Meanwhile, CNN continues to embarrass itself with squashed all-caps Helvetica, as if it’s 1995.

Do you remember NFTs? I remember NFTs. They exploded onto the scene in 2020 and were *everywhere* in the public discourse. At their peak in 2021, there were something like $25 billion in NFT sales globally. There were NFT Super Bowl ads. Jimmy Fallon had Paris Hilton on his show to awkwardly shill for NFTs.

And then, by 2022, 2023 at the latest, the bubble had burst and NFT market had lost up to 99% of its value.

Blessedly, I never have to think about those fucking Bored Apes ever again.

I remember thinking, when NFTs first appeared, that they were so obviously a scam, but also a vague sense of surprise that such an obvious scam was proliferating while we were still living through the previous blockchain-related scam, cryptocurrency. And since the NFT bubble burst, we moved on absurdly quickly to the next tech scam-bubble, AI.

A chart, sourced to Bloomberg News Reporting, depicting the AI bubble. A handful of companies—Nvidia, Microsoft, Intel, AMD, OpenAI, xAI, and a few others—are depicted as overlapping circles covered in a tangle of arrows depicting the flows of trillions of dollars back and forth between these same few companies.

It's been my suspicion that trying to fight AI corporations on copyright grounds wouldn't be a good strategy, because ultimately what would happen is they'd end up in a situation that just entrenches them and media megacorps as monopolists. And, well... deadline.com/2025/12/disney-op

Add on top of that how centralization of the web has lead to almost all art being published being under a ToS that can sell the data to OpenAI and ultimately indies get squeezed out of the fight.

Back when I was little, kids used to freak each other out about bad guys they saw or said they saw or heard somebody say they saw: Gang members. Kidnappers. Drug dealers.

Sometimes it was just attention-seeking or scaring each other for fun. Sometimes it was genuinely scary. Sometimes it was even based in reality. Regardless, these are the boogeymen of my childhood.

I’ve had the chance to talk to some little kids this week. You know who’s the playground boogeyman now? ICE.
