We are also very excited that @hailey.at@bsky.brid.gyhailey is part of our Technical Design Committee! The initial TDC was selected by ROOSTers, but we aim to hold elections in the future. Along with community feedback and ROOST staff priorities, the TDC will help advise on our projects and priorities.

"In the short term, a major collision is more akin to the Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster than a Hollywood-style immediate end of operations in orbit. Indeed, satellite operations could continue after a major collision, but would have different operating parameters, including a higher risk of collision damage."

This is why I did a poll here about name recognition for Exxon Valdez a few months ago! (You young'uns go read about it because many of you don't know)

One of the scariest parts of this project was learning more about Starlink's orbital operations. I had always assumed they had some kind of clever configuration of the satellites in the orbital shell that minimized conjunctions, and we would see the number of conjunctions grow over time in our simulations. But no! It's just random! There's no magic here, it's just avoiding collisions by moving a Starlink satellite every 2 minutes. This is bad.

The CRASH Clock uses the current density in altitude bins (averaged over eccentric orbits) of satellites, rocket bodies, and tracked debris, assuming typical cross sections for each type and orbital speeds. This calculation tells us how long to a collision if all orbital maneuvers were to suddenly stop.

The CRASH Clock is currently* at 2.8 days.

In 2018 it was 121 days.

*This is actually for June 2025 because that's when we ran it. Will update soon!

We set up a CRASH Clock website here: outerspaceinstitute.ca/crashcl

Note that this is a probabilistic calculation. A catastrophic collision could happen sooner than 2.8 days of no maneuvers. In our (extremely computationally expensive) collision simulation, just by random chance we actually got the first collision just 3 hours in.

We are currently well inside the Caution Zone. The probability of collisions happening if no avoidance maneuvers occur is >10% in any 24 hour period.

A plot showing how the 24 hour collision probability rises at lower values of the CRASH Clock. At very short CRASH Clock values (less than about 1.5 days), the probability of a collision happening within 24 hours if no avoidance maneuvers are executed is larger than 50%.

Today, Xinis found that there is no final order of removal against Abrego Garcia and thus no bar to her review of his habeas corpus petition. She then concluded, "The absence of a removal order raised an intractable problem for [the Trump regime," because the INA does not allow any removal proceedings in the absence of a final order of removal. This would suffice to justify releasing Abrego Garcia, but Xinis also turned to his constitutional argument for his release. 17/

Congress can only enact immigration laws and procedures that do not fall foul of the U.S. Constitution. This includes its statutorily enacted system of immigration detention. In a case called Zadvydas v. Davis, the Supreme Court addressed the due process limits on holding in detention a non-citizen who actually is actually subject to a final an order of removal. Zadvydas rejects unlimited detention. Detention to effectuate a removal order can only be for a "reasonably necessary" period. 18/

So perhaps we need to celebrate the artist-owned IP that isn’t controlled by Disney or WB or some other big corpo machine.

It might be nice to spread the word about comics and animators who do it on their own?

Anyone care to share? Because I, for one, could stand a bit more indie projects in my life. And I know it’s hard to do your own stuff and put food on the table, so it’s often a matter of choosing one or the other.

But still, it would be nice to have a thread of creative makers trying to do their own thing.

Any one have anything to share?

Re: theverge.com/news/842573/disne
This is exactly the problem I've been warning about with IP protections for AI models. Disney licensing with OpenAI creates the appearance that a license is needed at all, which gives them grounds to attack others in an effort to monopolize art.

Available now in tip releases on macOS: tab colors! Right click the tab bar, select a color. This was a surprisingly popular feature request (I guess used a lot by iTerm2 users?). I'm already digging it to mark diff projects, agents, etc.

Only mouse flow for now, command palette and keyboard to come later. Also only macOS to start. We have to think about this a bit more on GTK, and it seems like this was most heavily requested on macOS so shipped it there first.
