What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

So, my polyfill for Translator API works quite well. But I don’t know how to reasonably make up-to-date, high quality language models easily available for users, without requiring gigabytes of disk storage to host, say, pl-fe. I don’t want to bring too much centralization by hosting a model registry in one place for all pl-fe/polyfill users or favoring a single pl-fe deployment.

folks, let's say I want to configure a CI build (perhaps a Github action) that uses the *MINIMUM* version of Python and dependencies specified in a pyproject.toml file for the test. I.E. to ensure that features not present in those versions aren't used in new code added to a library.

Is there already an easy way to do this?

"Ahmed al-Ahmad, a 43-year-old Muslim man identified by Australian media, tackled & disarmed one of the shooters in the Bondi Beach attack, in which 11 people were murdered at a Jewish holiday event on Sunday.

Ahmad, whose cousin told Australia's News 7 that he was shot once in the arm & once in the shoulder, is being hailed as a hero on social media.
....Ahmad is currently in surgery & expected to make a full recovery."

Thinking about the conversation in the latest @djangochatDjango Chat Podcast about making it easier for people to test alpha versions of Django before they are released.

Test matrixes are normally how I've made sure that code works across multiple versions, via nox locally and in CI/CD (with a GitHub Action).

Creating a noxfile.py in django-new feels... presumptuous somehow? Also unsure about adding a GH Action for this…

Maybe circling the same thought process as I was thinking about for github.com/adamghill/troml/

@ezeno789ekZepp_Pf

Mastodon could become that. But, it would need to add some new features.

Mastodon has "editable posts". Which is great.

But Mastodon doesn't give you a "choice of home-feed algorithm" yet. Currently, Mastodon only support reverse-chron as its home-feed algorithm. (I.e., what some inaccurately call "no algorithm".)

And, Mastodon doesn't yet given users the "ability to moderate replies" to their posts.

@reiver@reiver ⊼ (Charles) :batman: @ezeno789ekZepp_Pf we do have the ability to moderate replies built into ActivityPub, though.

Every object has a `replies` collection that is owned and managed by the creator of the object. If you don't want someone's reply to appear in the list of replies, you can remove it.

Mastodon does not surface this feature. It also doesn't show the `replies` collection remotely. That's too bad; it would cover most of what people want from replies management.

The real disgrace in UK's welfare bill is that so much of it is spent on people in work. We are subsidising jobs that do not pay enough to live on. If we genuinely made sure work paid a decent living, then we would not have such a high bill.

Okay people, no one has reached out to try Kagi for free for three months.

I get it, they do pay Brave for some of their search results, and Brave absolutely sucks. I personally wish they would cut Brave loose as well, but But Kagi is still the best search experience I have seen in years. No "free" search can hold a candle to it, and I need decent search.

So here, free for all. This code will apparently work three times. Have at it.

Spread Fediverse through Entertainment

I have a thesis (related to helping bring more people onto the Fediverse) —

№1: Most people are interested in Entertainment.

№2: the collective appetite for Entertainment is, in a practical sense, unbounded.

Therefore, a (practical) path to help bring more people onto the Fediverse is to increase the amount of Entertainment on the Fediverse.

I clicked on a link and started reading. It read like a thoughtful interview from years passed...

And then I read this question: "You passed away on your eighty-eighth birthday – 4th August 2020. Do you reflect on mortality?"

What the fuck?

At the end of the article:
"Editorial note: This interview transcript is a work of dramatised historical reconstruction. Frances Allen died on 4th August 2020, and cannot speak. The words, reflections, and responses attributed to her in this document are constructed from historical records, published interviews, biographical materials, technical papers, and documented accounts of her life and work – but they are not her actual words, spoken in real time."

Tell me you used AI without telling me you used AI.

ALSO, this was "written" by a MAN dramatizing the perspective of a woman pioneer in computer science. He's got a whole series on dead woman.

FUCK RIGHT THE FUCK OFF.

George Clooney is an actor.

Put him in the role of a surgeon in front of a camera, and he will do and say things the average non-surgeon viewer will agree are surgeonish. After an hour of that, we are, as average non-surgeon viewers, satisfied and entertained.

Put him in an operating theatre, and the patient will fucking die because he's not a surgeon and knows nothing about really doing surgery.

This is a post about LLMs.

the json required to define multi-block structures is super simple btw. you just specify the x,y,z coords and the block type for each block. here's the json for a door:

"Structure": {
"0,0,0": "CrudeDoorX",
"0,1,0": "CrudeDoorUpperX"
}

i think this could be real nice for modders in the future 🤔
