What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

[EDIT] fixed and out on all the mirrors! Thanks for your patience!

The /latest/ packages repo, for amd64 FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE, has invalid metadata.

TLDR if you see this error during `pkg update -r FreeBSD-ports`

pkg: sqlite error while executing grmbl in file update.c:171: NOT NULL constraint failed: packages.path

Then go for a walk/pizza/fresh air, and check again when you're back.

Baptiste & Antoine have fixed it in the main package builder, and it's trickling out to mirrors atm.

Technical details in github.com/freebsd/pkg/issues/

I'll also update this toot once it's sorted!

: This image from NASA's Juno spacecraft captures dramatic atmospheric features in Jupiter's northern hemisphere during its 18th close flyby of the gas giant. The swirling clouds surround a circular feature within the "Jet N6" region of the jet stream. Jupiter's atmosphere lacks a solid surface, allowing storms and wind patterns, or jet streams, to persist for centuries. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS/Kevin M. Gill

Swirling clouds on the surface of Jupiter look like a Van Gogh painting. One large store, known as Jet N6, is seen in reddish brown with smaller pale streaks and swirls in its center. The rest of the clouds have been enhanced to show dark outlines, blue centers, and white swirls all jumbling together like paint.

How my independent website, Cybercultural, has fared during 2025 — a year when AI summaries whittled away search referral traffic and social media continued its war against hyperlinks. Also, I reflect on the state of the open web from a publishing pov, and the role of the fediverse within it. cybercultural.com/p/indie-web-

diet, weight loss, maybe follow along

A weird thing I have done for about 16 years is that all my weight information, and much of what I have eaten I have recorded in org-mode and while I haven't consistently exported the org-mode file itself, you can always see what the current state of my weight is:

dustycloud.org/tmp/org_diet_re

I used to generate an "all time" graph but hit some sort of bug in gnuplot. I should look at it again I guess.

Feel free to spy on me (but don't send unsolicited comments)

Proud of Denisa Arsene for presenting us and our work at the Complex Networks conference last week. She had a lot of engagement during her presentation, and made a ton of cool new science friends from all over the world 🤓 🌟

Key contribution: SANA (simulated annealing for network anonymisation), an algorithm that makes small alterations to social networks to protect the people in the network from de-anonymization attacks.

Motivation: Facilitating data sharing between social scientists while preserving the privacy of the people who were part of those studies.

More info, including preprint and poster (with ALT): latower.github.io/posts/2025/1

Denisa presenting her poster to another conference-goer. She is pointing excitedly to the part of the poster that summarises the finding that our new algorithm has the same running time as the state of the art and retains the same utility value, but performs much better in terms of anonymisation.Denisa posing next to her poster.

we managed to pay voice actors for kitsune tails and we're a bunch of impoverished queers running on hopes and dreams instead of an actual budget

just in case you're wondering about AAA studios who say they wanna use AI instead of actual voice actors. they're not even saving any significant amount of money
