A lot of feedback I’ve gotten on my post about passkeys from yesterday is about fears around a passkey sync provider account becoming “locked” or otherwise invalid.

If your passkey sync fabric provider can remotely nuke your saved passkeys from instances of the app running on your devices or otherwise make the data inaccessible, that’s genuinely horrible and unacceptable. I would never recommend a person use that software and cloud support. It calls peer-driven end-to-end encrypted sync and common sense into question.

Personally, I’d never use a passkey manager that had that property. I certainly wouldn’t contribute my time and attention to building such a manager. I’m also not familiar with a single passkey manager with that property. It is a serious leap to assume that sync being turned off deletes datas on devices or otherwise makes it inaccessible.

If a sync provider can delete your data from your devices, you don’t own your data. They do. If you cannot export your data from apps from that service to another app, then you don’t own your data.

These values that I hold personally are why I’m proud to work with individuals in standards bodies to design and build out data export and import. My recent conference keynote about passkeys took a long moment to celebrate the industry-wide collaboration to ensure people always own their data, even if they switch apps or platforms.

In TypeScript JSX, I mount:

<img src="coui://wikimedia-banff.jpg" style={{width: "50vw", height: "50vh", zIndex: 9002}} />

I have some reason to believe the web browser I'm executing this in is "fucked". On rendering, I find this CSS results in the image exactly fitting the screen, 100% on both axes.

Should this be taken as evidence the web browser is fucked?

The recall-ers specifically cite the recent "nonwithstanding clause" attacks against Teachers' union members and transgender minors as their motivation. The UCP member targeted here refers to the attempts to hold a vote on whether he keeps his job, as "undermining democracy".

Anyway if you're in Calgary-Cross or Brooks-Medicine Hat, it would help if you and a few thousand of your friends could sign this:

Two out of the three laptops I got back to customers yesterday had Linux on them. The majority. Not bad!

One sale (mentioned in another post) of a ThinkPad L15 laptop with Linux Mint Debian Edition.

The second laptop was a service where the customer had run out of storage space on a small SSD on an HP with Devuan Linux - I used CloneZilla to clone to a larger SSD and fixed a few other things.

The third laptop was a SSD replacement, fresh Windows 11 installation with data recovery and transfer.

Wer bietet weniger?

it's truly amazing what LLMs can achieve. we now know it's possible to produce an html5 parsing library with nothing but the full source code of an existing html5 parsing library, all the source code of all other open source libraries ever, a meticulously maintained and extremely comprehensive test suite written by somebody else, 5 different models, a megawatt-hour of energy, a swimming pool full of water, and a month of spare time of an extremely senior engineer

Just found out that Netflix is taking down She-Ra: Princesses of Power in February and thereafter there won't be a legal way to watch the whole series.

Well, shit.

The series was a perfect example of the sort of representation that would have made a huge difference to me if I'd had it when I was growing up. It's comforting to me even now as a badly adjusted queer adult. It's not perfect, but it dealt with a lot of themes on top of specifically queer issues that don't get a lot of attention in mass media, and it doesn't deserve to be swept under the carpet, taken away from the people it might mean a similar amount to in the future.

I'm sure people will be able to get hold of it if they want to track it down, but removing this stuff from discoverability is what does the damage. The sooner the industry implodes and we can go back to the concept of actually buying media that we enjoy the better.

After a number of truly awful attempts, I have a post about "Non-Sendable First Design" that I think I can live with.

I like this approach and I think you might like it too. It's simple, flexible, and most importantly, it looks "normal".
