What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

If you find the fediverse useful, don’t forget to support your instance (assuming they accept support). While the software is free, running instances is far from it. I am glad to be part of the community and want to see it continue on as a viable alternative. Thank you all for being here and I hope you have a good holiday season.

Hello, hachyderm.io! I'm Artur Manuel, better known as @amadaluziaArtur Manuel across other platforms.

I've been on Mastodon in the past under @amadaluzia@bsd.cafeArtur Manuel, and recently moved in because I was self-consious about my status as a *BSD user. If you aren't sure who I am from that tag alone, I have a webpage that describes who I am that can be found in the following URL.

amadaluzia.is-a.dev

You should expect long posts from me, as I generally like to write long posts for the sake of detail. If you want short form posts, wait for a while until I have a reason to make a short post, which can be pretty hard to find. Otherwise, you'll at least have something to read. :D

Aside from the basic Mastodon tags, I'll add my interests as well. I hope we can get along!

Reminder for , , and other programming types. You have now passed the last point to push to production for 2025. Pushing to production now means you risk debugging your fixes next week sat in your childhood bedroom, on dodgy WiFi, while your uncle makes rude and sexist remarks with your partner downstairs. Don't risk it. Your changes can wait until 2026.

This happened to me in the past, but I don't remember how I fixed it.

My mouse on my Mac Mini still moves but it can't click. So, in particular, I am writing from a MacBook Air, because my Mac Mini is stuck.

The solutions on the web say to restart it, which is bad enough, but I can't even do that: I can't use my mouse to click the menus to do that. I can't use my mouse to go to the terminal in front of me to do "sudo reboot". Etc.

I guess I can ssh to the Mac Mini from the MacBook Air I am using, and then do "sudo reboot".

Is there a better way?

i started trying to write a small site in Django recently and I think I'm really enjoying it? I've failed to learn Rails a few times but my Django site is set up so that there's a `models.py` with all my models, `views.py` with all my views and it feels easier for me to find things than it was with Rails

If you're Canadian, and you support this decision, it's worth sending Skate Canada an email saying so. I'm sure they're about to hear from people opposing it, and it would be good to make sure they’re hearing from people who think they did the right thing as well. skatecanada.ca/about/contact-u

I wanted a Christmas tree for our house, but the Bushwick vendors wanted too much money for even a tiny tree. So I printed perhaps the most unhinged 3-D print I’ve ever attempted. ”Oops, All Overhangs!” reliably triggered spaghetti warnings every half hour, until I figured out that turning off the light in the build chamber prevented the Bambu’s computer vision system from detecting this ~~abomination~~ extreme cleverness. makerworld.com/models/1949917

Photo of a small white Christmas tree sitting on a desk from afarClose-up of the 3-D printed tree. It’s white, with branches made of curving filament in spiky pattern.

Close up of the texture of the tree; spindly loops of white filament give the impression of an organic shape. Rendering of the print in the Bambi slicer. Aside from a cone-shaped core, it’s all long spindly overhangs.

Imagine that your language had a pangram—a sentence that uses every letter of the alphabet—without duplicates. Imagine that this pangram was also a poem, and that it's widely known.

For the sake of illustration, pretend that the English pangram

veldt jynx grimps waqf zho buck

is this poem [there are five red spelling wiggles in that line on my browser].

Imagine that this poem is so well known that even in far-flung cultural contexts, "v" signifies firstness, "e" signifies secondness, "l" signifies thirdness, and so on.

You start to find that the letters v, e, l, d, t, j, y get used to mark ordered lists. The names of the notes of the musical scale are given these letters, in this order. Your railway's tickets are labelled V, E, L, for first-, second-, and third-class.
