What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I became a software engineer because writing code is fun. Thinking through hard problems, designing elegant solutions, seeing the things you’ve built working for the first time… these moments are all deeply satisfying, so why in the world would I ever surrender them to AI?

I published a personal recap of State of the Word 2025, with a focus on the AI panel I joined with Mary Hubbard, Matt Mullenweg, Felix Arntz, and James LePage.

I also wrote about the work behind the AI Experiments plugin and what it means for the future of AI in WordPress.

@dotmeow.meow ∙ We'll be at #39C3 ^-^' hey I have a question from a friend (@femscifemsci :nya: :NixOwOs: (she is very cute bc she's scared to ask herself)): what do you plan to do about domain squatting?

if you plan to offer domains for a much smaller amount because you're not looking to get a ton of profit from this, are there any plans to do anything to stop someone from registering 9999 different domains for super cheap & then selling them off?

(and also on that note, I question I have is: are there any plans for what to do with the so called "premium domains" which cost a ton more than normal domains just bc they contain a short & common word?)

Soooo... There's already some big stuff in the works for 2026:

The Social Web Foundation (@swf) has kicked off a project to bring real end-to-end encryption to the Fediverse. It's a big undertaking, with real financial backing from the @sovtechfundSovereign Tech Agency

Check out the announcement: socialwebfoundation.org/2025/1

And, I'm very excited that is one of the projects selected to participate in the work alongside the @bonfire team.

I've noticed this is a common point of confusion, so for the record, the EU's USB-C charging law does not in any way prohibit other charging methods. It only mandates that if there are any ports on the thing at all, at least one of them better be friggin' USB-C

Big news for the ! End-to-end encryption is coming to .

@swf with support from @sovtechfundSovereign Tech Agency is coordinating two interoperable implementations.

Bonfire is proud to be one of these first two projects, alongside by @benpateBen Pate 🤘🏻

We think should simply be the default for any private communications, and we’re especially thrilled to bring private, trusted collaboration to the fediverse.

.meow TLD

A friend of mine, head of this project, was happy to announce today that her project to get .meow registered as a valid TLD with ICANN just dropped. If you like queer supportive initiatives with good goals & want a cute funny domain name, this is a good initiative to support. Hot dropped a couple of hours ago :3

"TL;DM (too long; didn't monitor) is a fast, extensible progress bar for Python, forked from tqdm. This fork was created to provide continued maintenance and development as the original tqdm project has become unmaintained."

choosing to kill embeddable Gecko (make it a only engine, essentially) over a decade ago was such a tragic mistake.

Alternative browsers & desktop apps had no choice but to go with WebKit or Blink/Electron.

As a result, Mozilla have nobody to blame but themselves for their minuscule marketshare and nil developer mindshare today.

So let me get this straight. The current state of fediverse integration on Threads is that you can write posts that federate, people can read and reply to them, you can like their replies, but you can't reply back, repost, or even share the post from Threads. And that's how they're gonna leave it.

The fediverse is on maintenance mode

Threads still supports federation with other apps like Mastodon, but Hayes was clear that it's not a top priority for the current roadmap. "It's something that we're supporting, it's something that we're maintaining, but it's not the thing that we're talking about that's gonna help the app break out," he said.
"As someone who has built a zillion consumer products, it's just really hard to keep these divergent platforms and products consistent on the same protocol over time," he explained.

"There's always going to be the trade-offs that these companies are thinking about of how much energy do I want to pour into compatibility with this ecosystem versus iterating on this thing I'm building and seeing what's valuable.

Since you lovely nerds love pushing to prod on Fridays, here's a list of a little over 33,000 IPs you might want to look at blocking inbound, especially to any VPN portals. They were all recently observed by us attempting to log in ( not just scanning ) various VPN portals including F5 BIG-IP, Cisco SSLVPN, SonicWALL SSLVPN, Palo Alto GlobalProtect, and others. :8bitrainbow:

What I'm listening to today ("best techno on Youtube" 7/13): "Square (Volca Keys, Volca FM, OP-1, PO-32)", Leonid Zarubin

Mr. Zarubin has a bunch of videos that stand out to me for getting a ton of mileage out of simple, low-end synths and guitar pedals (its not in this one, but some of his best tracks make amazing use of the Casio SA-5 keyboard for children). This one track in particular sticks with me for just having a really great chill feeling to it.

What I'm listening to today ("best techno on Youtube" 8/13): "Sempervirens", r beny

Here beny uses a Roli Seaboard MPE controller (a kind of squishy keyboard that records how hard you press and how you slide your fingers around the keys) to play a violin sample synth with the expressiveness of real violins. Run thru chunky reverb, each note becomes a stuttery chorus of violins. Result is an intense feeling of floating in viscous air, slowly orbiting an indistinct point.

Excerpt from a book I'm reading, Slow Poison, by Mahmood Mamdani, father of Zorhan Mamdani.

"FBI agents knocked on
my door...they asked what I thought of Marx. I said I had
never met him. Not surprisingly, this Ugandan Muyindi had never heard of Karl
Marx. “He’s dead.”

I said, “I'm sorry, what happened?”

“No, he died long ago.”

I wondered why, then, the question. “Why, then, are you asking me?”
Later, I would remind myself: the FBI introduced me to Karl Marx! "

Roughly a month after returning from Alabama, two FBI agents knocked on
my door, wearing beige raincoats, badges in hand. The FBI—I was thrilled. Just
like on television, I thought.

After a few preliminaries, they asked what I thought of Marx.

They said that Marx believed that the money of rich people should be taken
away and distributed to poor people.

I said it sounded like a fine idea!

At that point, they seemed to decide there was little point in continuing the
conversation, and they left. That, however, was not the end of the story. I went
to the library to look up Marx. Later, I would remind myself: the FBI intro-
duced me to Karl Marx! This was 1965. It would mark my entry point into the
civil rights movement. There was a student organization at the university called

RE: flipboard.com/@polygon/news-kk

I have never seen an Avatar movie, and have never met anyone who is excited by the storytelling, world building, character development, or social commentary of Avatar. Maybe that says more about the people I hang out with, but the most I ever hear about the series is, “it’s very technically impressive.”

Am I missing something, or can I continue ignoring its existence?
