At some point in 2026, I want to migrate ALL of the Linux coverage I wrote at Forbes between 2018 and 2021 over to the new linuxforeveryone.net.

While the majority of it is outdated, I'm scared it will just disappear someday. And some of it was damn good writing!

It deserves to be preserved -- and not locked behind gross paywalls.

I don't know what it would take (maybe just being shipped off to Mars is the answer?) I say this mean thing because I do suspect that some of them KNOW they aren't as liberal as they like to pretend they are.

But the fact that so many people do not realize -still- in 2025 that they discount women, or that misogyny is a HUGE red flag for ummmm…how do I put this: being a shitty human who shouldn't be trusted…. is a pretty dismaying part of this entire millennium so far.

I say this as a person who has lived for decades -outside- of heterosexual couplings, yet also surrounded by them, of course.

I see women almost every damned day be ignored or worse by people -socialized- (brainwashed/indoctrinated, etc) to become…jerks as humans. And I do greatly appreciate people who do not succumb to that.

and yes, women get brainwashed to overvalue males and dismiss women too..

they generally aren't socialized to become -such- abusive, dismissive jerks about it, though.

If you are keen on attending next year's conference and require financial support, please consider applying for the "Paul Schenkeveld Travel Grant" for 2026.

You can do this by contacting the board before February 1st, 2026, stating who you are, what you are doing with BSD (😈⛳🐡), and why you should receive the grant.

This grant is in recognition Paul's accomplishments and in memory of his work and dedication to the BSD community, the EuroBSDCon Foundation is offering a travel grant in his name.

Paul was one of the few - if not the only one - to have attended all EuroBSDCon conferences since their inception in 2001. Besides his many contributions to BSD in general and the EuroBSDCon conferences in particular, he established the EuroBSDCon Foundation in 2010 to ensure continuity for many more conferences.

The EuroBSDCon Foundation Board will consider all valid submissions in its sole discretion and communicate its selection by March 2025. The selected person will receive travel expense reimbursement and hotel accommodation during the conference as well as free entrance to the conference and social event.

More information can be found on: eurobsdconfoundation.org/trave

The 2026 edition will be held in Brussels, Belgium.

also in 2026!

a statement from Waterfox team:

"... browsers are operating systems of their own, and a browser’s job is to be a good steward of that environment. AI, in its current form and in my opinion does not match that responsibility.

... The core browsing experience should be one that fully puts the user in control, not one where you’re constantly monitoring an inscrutable system that claims to be helping you.

Waterfox will not include LLMs. Full stop."

a statement from Vivaldi team:

"Today, as other browsers race to build AI that controls how you experience the web, we are making a clear promise:

We’re taking a stand, choosing humans over hype, and we will not turn the joy of exploring into inactive spectatorship. Without exploration, the web becomes far less interesting."

a statement from LibreWolf team:

"As there seems to have been recent confusion about this, just a quick "official" toot to then pin: we haven't and won't support "generative AI" related stuff in LibreWolf. If you see some features like that (like Perplexity search recently, or the link preview feature now) it is solely because it "slipped through". As soon as we become aware of something like this / it gets reported to us, we will remove/disable it ASAP."

food, sentimentality

you ever have one of those moments where a taste or smell brings back memories?

Today I made coffee that brought of a flood of memories from my teen years, of sitting in my Opa & Oma's kitchen, the smell of bacon & scrambled eggs in cast iron on the stove, freshly buttered toast, and an old-school percolator of coffee brewing that he'd share with my dad and me. Opa & Oma & Dad are no longer with us and that house has long been razed, but they all live on in this mug of coffee.

One quick way to lose my respect is to say "we don't know whether AI is gaining consciousness"

WITH A STRAIGHT FACE.

Oh. My. God. Yes we do. Large language models are not intelligent. They are not conscious.

If this is difficult for you (or someone you know) to understand, please read the book AI Snake Oil by Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor.

I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking. Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals… All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it. We CAN change things.

Dare to be inconvenienced.

We have been trained to prioritize "seamless" experiences over ethical ones. But every convenience has a hidden cost, whether it is labor rights, environmental impact, or the erosion of privacy.

Efficiency is a metric for machines, not for a meaningful life. When we stop choosing products solely for their convenience, we reclaim our agency. We choose local over global, human over algorithm, and sustainable over instant.

What would happen if we stopped using services that do very little good for society, even if it means taking the long way around?
