What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

One thing I wish folks knew better about "Linux" that the annoying evangelists never seem to care to mention.

One of the most important differences from other platforms if *how you get your software*.

You don't download it from the author/publisher who might be (these days, is) bundling malware.

You don't get it from a walled garden with commercial incentives to let publishers hurt you.

You don't have to fumble around Google trying to find if the site offering it is reputable.

You get it from a party, usually made up of dedicated volunteers, who believe in the platform and who are vetting all the software they build and package for you. Usually the same one you got your base system from.

Someone close to me purchased a new computer just recently. His previous computer was Windows 10, which he liked. I warned him that Windows 11 was a different beast and he could expect a lot more spying, copilot in everything, less customization, and even ads in the start menu.

Apparently he agreed with me and he has started testing the Linux Mint Live Image today. He seems to like it. He said it was much easier to use than he expected and it is very fast.

It makes me smile that another person I know has found their way to Linux.

Hello Fediverse -- let's have an and introduce ourselves :3

We're dotmeow, a queer-run community project to register the gTLD .meow. But not only for meows and giggles! The profits of this gTLD shall go to community causes, turning every domain into queer community support, especially focusing on trans issues.

While we've already passed the ICANN Application Support Program, we're just now launching our web & social media presence(s). So while there's not much to see here yet, follow us if you're interested in registering a .meow domain and potentially supporting us in the way -- crowdfunding TBA soon.

Outside of announcements we want to engage with the fediverse as regular fedizens and won't spam you with meaningless ads <3

After years of fucking around, compromising and second guessing, I have settled on 3 principles when it comes to my blog:

1. No analytics beyond whatever is baked into Ghost
2. No sponsorships and no advertising, not now, not ever
3. I will never charge more than $2.50 a month for membership and I will never raise my prices

This vase was a custom order for a couple’s 9th wedding anniversary. They wanted something they could pass down to future generations and thought a ceramic piece would make a good commemorative heirloom. They mentioned their love for terracotta amaryllis, a variety I’d never heard of. Terracotta literally means “baked earth” so I was excited to render the flower in clay tones using a mixture of pink Alabama and a clay called Newman Red from California.

A decorative vase with a flared, undulating rim and partially visible turquoise interior. The vase is a warm brick red with textured floral designs in peach and dark orange with olive green stems. There are several carved rings around the neck of the vase painted in the same satin-sheen olive color as the flower stems. Additional carved geometric patterning and raised dots ornament the vase.

This week streams!
GBC World update: the seaside town now features a Mall! A frightening number of italian cars out of the nineties can be seen in the parking lot (available in iconic colors such as: moldy green, blinding red and sad beige). And then Battle and Overworld Sprite for a Vampire Lord boss!
Both the GBC World and new enemies sprites are coming to itch!

A top down pixel art view showing the current progress in creating a seaside town area. The location features a few houses, some with an accessible roof, a Laboratory with a greenhouse structure attached and a tree house. To the north-east there are rocky cliffs and a cave that leads up into the promontory. In the southeast, just below the rocks, a sandy beach leading to a bay area. A few npcs are starting to populate the location, exploring the surroundings and having a chat.Two pixel art sprites of a Vampire Lord. The bigger sprite is posing for battle and is seen from a lateral point of view. Its body is human like, and he is dressed with some peculiar clothes such as a wide mantle with big, horn-like shoulders. Below the cape, white, puffy sleeves, with laced wrists. Elizabethian breeches and pointed shoes with a ribbon also contribute to the extravagant style, as a big ascot scarf completes the look. A fur like scarf envelopes its bat-like head, with huge wrinkled bat-like ears and a pointy nose.
The overworld sprite is seen frontally, surrounded by three lesser bat monsters.

I also got to use this Python oddity for real in a test suite:
github.com/coveragepy/coverage

# Make two sets which are equal but iterate differently.
numset1 = set(range(20))
numset2 = set(range(20))
for i in range(0, 20, 2):
numset2.remove(i)
for i in range(0, 20, 2):
numset2.add(i)

def test_scrambled_sets():
assert numset1 == numset2
assert list(numset1) != list(numset2)

Just added Web Reachability API (at least that’s what I’m calling it) support to ip.small-web.org.

It’s for testing the reachability of your Small Web servers (using a domain or, more importantly, an IPv4/IPv6 address). I’m using it to implement Web Numbers¹ support in Auto Encrypt² and Kitten³.

Protocol:

• At http://<endpoint> return an empty HTTP 200 response that includes the following custom header: 'web-reachability-id': ‘<uuid>'
• Hit: ip.small-web.org/reach/<endpoint>/<uuid>/
• If you get a 200 response back, your endpoint is reachable. Anything else signals an error.

Enjoy! 💕

When we’re giving advice on who to follow to make this place more full of ***life*** for folk arriving, we should add:

- search works well, though not everyone’s posts are searchable; at least you’ll find a starter set of folk to follow
- look at who boosts posts in your areas of interest and look at their timeline; these folk tend to be the connectors in networks, and on fedi, we rely on boosts to move signal

Strangers, purportedly men, sending a private message that just says 'do you mind if I ask you something?' or 'can I ask you a question?' Is this some new scam? I’ve just blocked my third in two days. I blocked them quicker than a reply guy on a 5000-character instance who lectured me about Linux, so I didn’t notice if the messages were all from the same server. The wording was similar but the profiles were different. Strange scam, if it is one. There were no dodgy links.
