Elkjøp, likely the largest Norwegian based electronics store, is now running ads for Copilot where they speak about how great Recall is. Likely the ad is paid for by Microsoft.

They show the picture below and they talk of how great it is that the machine remembers everything you have done with it (and has the pictures to prove it!).

I guess when you make something that most people do not want, you just push it harder.

Remember that you have a choice to move away from Big Tech.

If you are on a Windows 11 computer, pause everything you are doing for one minute and:

Open computer settings
Click on Accessibility on the left-hand menu
Scroll down the Accessibility menu and click on the Keyboard Option
Under the "related settings" tab, click "Typing" which should have a description of "spellcheck, autocorrect, text suggestions."
Turn off the AI "correct misspelled words"
and most importantly: turn off Typing Insights.

[ID: a screenshot of the above mentioned Windows 11 settings, showing that Typing Insights is now turned off, with the following description from Microsoft:

"Windows is using artificial intelligence to help you type
To help you save time and type efficiently, Windows can learn to suggest words, autocorrect spelling mistakes, and interpret swiped typing. Take a look at the insights below to see up-to-the-minute stats on how Windows has learned to improve typing for you. These stats are stored only on this device and Microsoft does not collect the typing insights data."

Generative AI, and especially AI that is used to "personalize" and track your activity across the web and on your computer are never going to be in your best interest, it is always going to serve these companies in whatever way will line their pockets the most, and all it takes is updating their terms of service once, and then all of that data they promised they weren't collecting suddenly all belongs to them.

IT-ler warnen seit Jahren: Microsoft zieht alles in Richtung totaler Abhängigkeit.

If you are wondering if it is possible to use Microsoft fonts in writing documents on Linux, then: yes, you can! I have seen lots of people (including my friends) refuse to switch to Linux because they have concern about the absence of Microsoft fonts on Linux. They don't know that installing them is very easy. If you need Microsoft fonts, it's only a one line command on terminal to install.

Linux already contain fonts that mimic Microsoft fonts, which it uses when opening a document with Microsoft fonts if you don't have them installed on your system.

A screenshot of LibreOffice Writer. The document is showing a comparison between Times New Roman and Liberation Serif, which are identical. Below them, there is a comparison between Arial and Liberation Sans, which are also identical.

The French city of Lyon is dropping software in favor of alternatives. It doesn't want to depend on proprietary, closed-source software, and it doesn't want to depend on *American* software. It doesn't want "potential [US] governmental surveillance."
news.itsfoss.com/french-city-r

PS: It seems clear that is playing a role here. While he uses tariffs to boost American companies, he scares foreign buyers away from American companies, at least software companies that collect user data. He's creating a problem for American software. Microsoft didn't help itself on this front by giving $1 million to the Trump inauguration.

BTW, many other US closed-source software companies gave $1m to the Trump inauguration, among them Adobe, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Perplexity.

'According to multiple sources, the exponential capacity of the AWS public cloud system allows the army to have “endless storage” for holding intelligence on almost “everyone” in Gaza. One source who used the cloud-based system during the current war described making “orders from Amazon” for information while carrying out their operational tasks, and working with two screens — one connected to the army’s private systems, and the other connected to AWS.

Military sources emphasized to +972 and Local Call that the scope of intelligence collected from the surveillance of all Palestinian residents of Gaza is so large that it cannot be stored on military servers alone. In particular, according to intelligence sources, much more extensive storage capabilities and processing power were needed to keep billions of audio files (as opposed to just textual information or metadata), which compelled the army to turn to the cloud services offered by tech companies.'

As expected, on some well known news sites my latest blog post also drew some interesting comments, offering a few things to think about. On average, the readers who replied see "Linux" as the opposite of macOS or Windows, basically an anti something. Not because of its strengths, but because of the flaws they associate with its "competitors". They also focus entirely on the desktop world, which I can understand.

Many of them also confuse popularity with quality. The fact that other operating systems such as the BSDs or illumos are less widespread leads them to assume they are less "interesting". That is an ideological contradiction, because by the same logic Windows and macOS would be far superior to everything else simply because they dominate an enormous share of desktop systems.

EDIT:it was a misreading around a recent change & the original article was updated. Gmail's not reading your emails (yet?)

"Gmail can read your emails and attachments to train its AI, unless you opt out"

And that means if you don't use Gmail but you write to a Gmail address your email will be used if the person didn't opt out.
