🆕 blog! “Reputation Scores for GitHub Accounts”

The folks at GitHub know that Open Source maintainers are drowning in a sea of low-effort contributions. Even before Microsoft forced the unwanted Copilot assistant on millions of repos, it was always a gamble whether a new contributor would be helpful or just some witless jerk. Now it feels a million times worse.

There are some…

Are you using to host your favorite AI-assisted and otherwise vibecoded project because your desire for dopamine has utterly destroyed your willingness to learn new things? Do you neither care about how you're "flooding the room" of the free software ecosystem nor about the greater societal implications, insisting that "it is what it is"?

Check out , the world's most popular AI-first platform! Copilot, annoying maintainers with slop, you'll fit just right in!

So we know AI is making it easier for people to submit low-quality PRs or contributions to projects on GitHub and the team is actively looking at short-term and long-term solutions to try to make this better. Would love your input/feedback as well any other pain points so we can try to make the experience better. Feel free to reply here or on this thread github.com/orgs/community/disc

Ok, beyond posting *about* , time to post *on* mastodon.
For those interested in , , , , development and other such things, this blog post/article from the other week may be of interest.

It chronicles what had already been a year in the making of development, the trials and tribulations of dealing with vendors and the quest to bring reduced precision ( ) to main stream

I keep wondering how many people managed to fully leave . (for a nice summary of common reasons to leave check out sfconservancy.org/GiveUpGitHub/)

I mean, even if you move your own projects to something like , you’ll still likely have to interact with projects hosted on GitHub. If Musk didn't manage to make everyone abandon Twitter, I'm not sure what are the odds of a mass exodus from GitHub these days.

Lol, is so funny — disabled code search if you are not logged in.

Before, I successfully searched in some project's code without login, but looks like since 2026 desided to make things worse.

Thankfully, "git clone" through HTTPS and good old grep still working without GitHub account, lol

Screenshot of GitHub with attempt to see the search results for code in some project. Attempt failed, because for now it is mandatory to log in, to see search results for code.

The message in the page states: "Sign in to search code on GitHub. Before you can access our code search functionality please sign in or create a free account."Emacs frame with two windows: the "git clone" from GitHub repo in the top window, and the grep results on the bottom window.

Measuring the popularity of languages has always been tough. While there are several well-known rankings out there (e.g. the TIOBE index), these days I have the most faith in this one madnight.github.io/githut/#/pu

Love or hate , it's so widely used that the popularity of something there is probably a pretty good reflection of the broader picture.

I can't honestly say I have any sympathy for people who feel betrayed by , considering that GitHub has always been a platform.

If you are a coder, why on Earth would you ever host your FOSS code on a non-FOSS system??

It's a recipe for betrayal. Andreesen Horowitz invested $100M USD in GitHub all the way back in 2012, and *now* you're upset??

1. click on a GitHub issue link in my search results
2. click on a pull request link in that issue comment thread
3. ???
4. PROFIT!1!!

These were the only two actions related to GitHub originating from my IP address over the last several hours.

This is bullshit.

I am going to bet the rate limits got bumped due to LLM scraping. Fscking clowns. 🤡

GitHub is not a serious code foundry.
Microso^WMicroslop is not a serious company.

So, Umzug abgeschlossen.

@RogerBWRev. Roger BW 😷 @adamchainzAdam Johnson :django: :python: prompted by this I gave a go. Plus point: importing from Just Works™, it even correctly imported comments on issues, something vitally important that many such migration tools just can't be arsed with. Minus points: the CLI tool is undocumented and it appears to not be easily scriptable - I couldn't find any equivalent of the `--json` and `--jq` options that `gh` supports; no tool for converting Github Actions.

2.41.0 is out!

github.com/CatimaLoyalty/Andro

This release adds support for UTF-8 barcodes (by default, the encoding will be extracted from the pkpass file or auto-detected if set otherwise).

It also contains some bugfixes and UI tweaks.

Due to Google dropping Android 5 compatibility in their libraries, this will be the last release available for Android 5.

Coming soon to an app store near you.

For whatever reason, Github banned my IP for one hour and I need to see what my students have been doing.

They must contribute to the opensource project of their choice and 99% of them end up on Github

And, yes, I have a Github account even if I would like to get rid of it. But I can’t grade my students.

Monopolies are bad. You think that it happens to other? It will hurt you deeply, sooner or later. It will hit you when you least expect it.

So you print a scientific paper at home. A van with HP markings suddenly parks in front of your house. You start reading the paper. You take notes. You finish reading the paper. A person emerges from the van parked in front of your house, knocks on your door and tells you: "It took you 3 hours to read the paper. That'll be $0,36. Cash or card?"

That's more or less what is now doing with self-hosted runners for GitHub Actions.

resources.github.com/actions/2

Introduction of the GitHub Actions cloud platform charge

We are introducing a $0.002 per-minute Actions cloud platform charge
for all Actions workflows across GitHub-hosted and self-hosted runners.
The new listed GitHub-runner rates include this charge. This will not impact
Actions usage in public repositories or GitHub Enterprise Server
customers.

This aligns pricing to match consumption patterns and ensures consistent
service quality as usage grows across both hosting modalities.

This will impact self-hosted runner pricing starting March 1, 2026.

I'm remiss in posting an , so here goes!

I manage the team at . We look for ways to apply PL and program analysis research. Our most visible feature is , which powers Precise Code Nav on GitHub.

As you might expect, I'm very keen on reading academic papers (used to organize the Boston chapter), and I'm getting back into writing them more.

I love watching sports with my kids and coaching them in . ⚽

GitHub sending out emails today about a price change taking effect Jan 1st 2026 is a bit cheeky when lots of DevOps teams are likely to be thin on the ground

resources.github.com/actions/2

Now while it does suggest that change is likely a reduction in bills, the change to charge for **self hosted** run time is going to sting (that goes live March 1st 2026)

I think @Codeberg and @forgejo are likely to see another uptick in users.

I'm exploring what alternatives exist. I have something neat to share.

See the little checkmark on this repo?

codeberg.org/louwers/duckdb-bu

The of this repository is running on . Bridged with yojo yojo.emersion.fr/

I think each platform has its advantages, but definitely CI is a strong aspect of SourceHut and a weak point of Codeberg / . Both projects are based in the and are open source.

What is your experience with alternatives?
