Reminder that you can’t change anyone’s mind unless they’re open to another point of view. But you often *can* change behaviors, at least around you, and that matters.

And the consistently best way to do that is to calmly and firmly set limits. Someone saying Nazi shit around you? “Don’t say that shit around me, Bob” and pointedly change the subject.

Good morning Fedi friends! I hope you had a lovely Christmas Day.

I spent 6+ hours building LEGO sets yesterday - one for my child (a pirate ship) & one for myself (the Wicked Emerald City Wall Art - still a work in progress).

I was checking my fedi feed from time to time and it was making me SO HAPPY to see many friends building LEGO sets. It seems a popular hobby here 💛

You should have seen my excitement when I found a rare teal brick separator in the Wicked set 😂

Have a great day everyone

A photo of a LEGO pirate ship with white sails and a black skull in the front one… in the background you can see a lit up Christmas tree A photo of the LEGO Wicked Emerald City Wall Art resting on a table… the top part (Emerald City) is mostly complete but the bottom part is under way. The Wicked Witch minifig is standing in the top right corner.

The dark teal brick separator is placed next to the set

Christopher Tanner (Guardian letters) is right:

we don't need a social mobility plan what we need is an equality plan... we don't need to play the game of class difference better, we need to reduce (and reduce the influence of) class difference(s) in the first place.

A plan for equality is what we need (what one might have expected from a so-called left Govt, but yes I know they're Labour in Name Only)... however, this is something our political class will never deliver!

I disagree with the very idea of having a social mobility plan. The term itself captures the essence of what is wrong – class and inequality, and the notion that being upwardly mobile is the path to success. We are still a deeply class-divided society, underpinned by vast differences in economic and educational opportunity that recreate the social markers and attitudinal differences towards achievement and aspiration that constantly divide us.

We need an equality plan, not a social mobility one. As in 1997, a Labour government with a huge majority is failing to come up with a narrative that goes beyond ideas that merely tinker around the edges of the real challenge.

But I'm also incredibly proud of the work we did at TechCrunch this year, breaking new ground and stories, (and occasionally executives' hearts). Here's a few stories we covered that I also want to highlight:

1/4) @lorenzofbLorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai broke news linking the 'Careto' hacking group, which targeted Cuban state institutions, to the Spanish government. Absoluteley incredibly reporting that took years to piece this story together.

2/4) After Trump took office, Elon Musk and his DOGE lackeys quickly raided federal departments and ransacked their systems of some of the U.S.' most sensitive and classified information. I parsed what ultimately became the 'biggest breach of U.S. government data' as it was happening — even if all of the effects won't be felt for some time.

One of the best parts about hosting family gatherings around the winter holidays is that you have the power to kick people out of your own home if they’re being assholes.

It’s amazing how much better behaved everyone is after That One Guy gets told “look, make an effort to use my kid’s actual name and correct pronouns or leave”.

60% of U.S. adults reported that societal division is a significant source of stress in their lives, 54% said they felt isolated, left out (50%) or lack companionship (50%) often or some of the time.

I don’t see any fixes on the horizon. The internet connected us but instead of creating empathy it just exposed how much we disagree with half the country.

apa.org/news/press/releases/20

@carnage4lifeDare Obasanjo It wasn't supposed to connect us with our shithead neighbors we were already too connected with. It was supposed to connect us with people on the other side of the world they were telling us to hate. That's what it did, and that's what companies like Facebook and Google have done their best to suppress by artificially limiting reach to same language and geographic bubbles.
