What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

If you are trying hard to keep registrations on your instance open for everyone, like we do, try to block registrations from following mailservers:

howovur.com
contaco.org
hetzez.com
aliban.org
m3player.com
rescueence.com
meocon.org
choichay.com
easymailer.live
hiemail.net
gamintor.com
consistth.com
kontoko.org
nuoifb.com
bomnet.net

They are now so desperate that they even retry from the same mailservers...

Be very mindful about the content you consume online.

You might think you are above its negative influence on your mood and thoughts, but you aren't. Nobody is.

The content you consume influences the way you think over time. Even if you are on a platform to fight the opposition, what the algorithm is feeding you there will have an influence on yourself over time.

Be careful what you feed to your brain.

I won't share Hank's video because it feels like spreading pro-big tech propaganda, but you can find it on his YouTube channel.

The video, imo, feels way out of character for Hank. It's confusing, manic, and out of touch.

The video lacks any coherent takeaway, besides the encouragement for his audience to continue arguing over the semantics of water consumption, and not the material harms these data centers and their energy use cause local communities.

The debate over AI energy and water consumption doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Hank's video, too, exists in a moment of protest. Working class communities are fighting against data center proposals in their small towns. Increased cost of living is a key argument of the protest.

To discuss AI water consumption without contextualizing the debate; without sharing who's affected if Hank is wrong, is a dishonest omission.

Hank makes no mention of any of this until the last 30 secs of a 24 min video.

Rob Pike got spammed by "AI Village", a poorly considered experiment in autonomous AI agents which has been sending out unsolicited emails to people (including NGOs and journalists) since April - I wrote up some notes on what happened and how it all works: simonwillison.net/2025/Dec/26/

There is a major difference between the left and the right. And journalists need to stop ‘both sidesing’ things.

Because no matter how much you disagree with the left’s policy proposals, none of them set out to hurt people.

After 63 years of life, I have come to realise the single distinguishing issue - equality, parity, fairness.

The right is allergic to equality. Someone’s gain is always their imagined loss.

We talk a lot about the culture of the fedi and hand wring a lot about how to get Black and Brown folks back here, but you know what could be a big step forward?

Normalizing the fulfillment of mutual aid.

The fedi’s rep isn’t great right now for a few reasons, but imagine if the fediverse specifically made it a point to start clearing every mutual aid effort it sees for marginalized groups and not just white guys.

It’s a small thing, but it’s something that separate this space from everywhere else.

Committing to that intention would get people’s attention.

RE: social.coop/@smallcircles/1157

I started messing with an implementation of a simple Fediverse server in Python last xmas and I wish I had this resource back then. I've been making some additions to my implementation this holiday as well and I'll probably write a few blog posts about it myself, but this resource is really great and covers most of what you need to know on this topic.

I often want to take screenshots of anime, but because of DRM, it’s frequently impossible to capture screenshots or still images. As a result, it feels difficult to grab even a single scene from an anime. I often wonder how everyone else manages to take pictures.
