What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

"Ask everybody in the picture whether they agree to be photographed or filmed. Inform them if you want to publish the picture anywhere. It follows that shots from the stage towards the audience and long shots in the hackcenters, assemblies and the other public areas are not possible! Please note that we might ask photographers and film teams to leave if they don’t respect this."

Do you want help with using Mastodon or the wider Fediverse?

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions about using this place! There's no such thing as a silly question, it's fine to ask about anything however simple.

I'm especially keen to help new or non-technical people on here 🙂 And yes I am a human being, I don't use AIs!

(Alternatively, you can browse my website at fedi.tips which has lots of easy-to-understand help and advice.)

I understand (yet don't agree) on the social media ban for children some countries have implemented and others are discussing.

However, if we look at the state of some societies right now, I don't think it's just kids who need to stay away from platforms like Facebook, X and TikTok.

Of course, the real problem is not "social media" but rather the companies who run these corporate controlled, rage bait algorithm fueled money makers.

one of the most helpful heuristics for spotting grift: a promise of value or money without requiring value* from you. beware this. we all want the 'exchange rate' to be as low as possible but as it ➡️ zero the more likely it is you'll just get fools' gold — *whether time, effort, skill or insight

RE: toot.cafe/@nolan/1157980934393

I'm seeing more and more web devs vibe coding apps for personal use. Or at least using LLMs to help quickly build something that only they and their family members will use.

This is interesting for Dropserver.org, which should be ideal for hosting such apps. The apps run in a sandbox so a fumble on the LLM's part is not going to be a big problem. It has user management built in, so you can spare the LLM from building that for you. And backups, restores, moving the hosted app around is designed to be snagless.

I try to remember I’m lucky. I work for a true mission-driven company. A non-profit, but big enough to not deal with the non-profit problems largely. I’m compensated well. I don’t feel like I’m contributing evil to the world. I feel like I am helping to make people’s lives better, even if it’s still stuck in a capitalist framing.

And I remind myself how rare that is.

When I think of rage quitting over some annoying thing, I remember how rare that combination is in this toxic timeline.

the guy with a flamethrower burning down your house shakes his head and says that fire is inevitable
he tells you that you should not be a luddite
that you should stop standing in the way of progress
that you should buy one of the fireproof suits he sells
like everyone else did
when he burned down their houses

No idea if the CLI app I'm writing will be useful to anyone, including myself. But it's been a fun exercise, and I intend to keep working on it.

It's been a great way to get better at writing Swift, though I'm still not sure my code is all that great – maybe that's my crippling self-doubt talking?

Maybe we need a better term, but all media should be decentralized. Like a website. Anybody can put it up and anybody can access it, nobody in between. Podcasts are like that. helps. does it for on demand video. does it for live video. for radio. for articles. There are others.

But our biggest need at the moment is in consumption. Better tools for those who want to access this stuff, manage it and handle recommendations. Great app developers.

Of course

says he spoke to Vladimir just hours ahead of meeting with leader Volodymyr .

“I just had a good & very productive telephone call with President Putin of Russia prior to my meeting, at 1:00 P.M. today, with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump said the Zelensky meeting would occur at Mar-a-Lago’s main dining room, with reporters watching [just in case you thought it wasn’t just for show].
