Why would incredibly rich CEOs make only $1 a year when they could pay themselves millions?
The reason is taxes.
Income from work is the most heavily taxed type of income,
as it is subject to both income and payroll taxes.
A self-employed person who makes a modest income of $60,000 will pay over $13,000 of it in payroll and income taxes.
Meanwhile, high-income earners who earn a $400,000 salary can pay about 30% of their income in payroll and income taxes.
So the first step in avoiding taxes is avoiding salary,
and that is what our richest Americans often do.

@cdarwinChuck Darwin I remember at a previous workplace when colleague and I asked for our first raise in years, one of the company directors told us how we were better paid than he was (this was just after talking about bidding a quarter of a million on a house they liked!).

There was a recent poll here about what Desktop OS you use and Linux was the most popular answer. This proves this community is far more technical than your average consumer.
I'm not critical of that, I'm just saying we need to appreciate we aren't representative of that vast majority of people out there. I can't even get "normies" to *consider* joining the fediverse.
I don't want to "chase numbers" I want my family members to be safe but we're doing a terrible job attracting them.

Today's random thought: Your phone, like mine, probably has a "Level" app, which is most naturally used with the phone on its side for better accuracy, including resting on top of (or below) things. Your phone (also like mine) probably has buttons on the sides that make its sides not 100% straight and level end to end (because the buttons make bumps). So, how does the Level app deal with that? Does it have a range of 'close enough to level', or some specific compensation, or button detection?
