Slaughtering Competition Problems with Quantifier Elimination

Anytime I see questions on mse that ask something “simple”, I feel a powerful urge to chime in with “a computer can do this for you!”. Obviously if you’re a researching mathematician you shouldn’t waste your time with something a computer can do for you, but when you’re still learning techniques (or, as is frequently the case on mse, solving homework problems), it’s not a particularly useful comment (so I usually abstain). The urge is particularly powerful when it comes to the contrived inequalities that show up in a lot of competition math, and today I saw a question that really made me want to say something about this! I still feel like it would be a bit inappropriate for mse, but thankfully I have a blog where I can talk about whatever I please :P So today, let’s see how to hit these problems with the proverbial nuke that is quantifier elimination!

Můj názor na decentralizaci ve Fediverse není tak pesimistický: řešením je velké množství malých instancí, které se prostě nebudou stíhat vzájemně nějak blokovat, a obhájí svobodu diskutovat o naprosté většině témat, pokud bude komunikace dodržovat určité základní konvence - "celoplošných tabu" se ustaví relativně málo. Z této všeobecné federace se vyčlení pouze několik málo tematicky vyhraněných instancí, které vytvoří do jisté míry polouzavřené komunity; ostatní instance se budou snažit omezit moderaci jen na největší excesy, botnety a spam a budou podporovat možnost vzniku polemických debat v rámci konsensuální účasti v diskuzi.

유행 혹은 동조압력, 어떤 대중화된 천박함 등에 무비판적인 것에 실망하지만, 그런 집단('대중'?)을 적극적으로 타자화하고, 사고나 언설이 아닌 개개인에 대해 배제를 손쉽게 말하는 엘리티시즘은 더 visceral하게 싫다. 디테일과 각론에 고개를 끄덕이다가도 그 내적 동기가 비쳐보이는 순간 혐오스러움.

rant about AI

I cannot describe just how much this AI nonsense is affecting my mental health. Things really took a turn when a coworker sent me a page of Copilot text instead of discussing a software library with me. I don't just want the bubble to burst, I want the technology to die. Completely. Back to before we ever invented it. I don't want to be forced to use it. I don't want to see anyone using it.

But I don't feel I'm actually able to push back on AI use at work because I'm burnt out and can't actually create much output. My coworkers use Copilot and can create much more code that does technically work, even if I find the process dubious. I'm overwhelmed at work. They're making us do too much. I don't have a leg to stand on to fight anything.

Also please do not argue with me about terminology I do not fucking care.
