I just learned that Stewart Cheifet passed away only a few days ago on December 28th, 2025. For those unfamiliar with him, he was the creator and host of The Computer Chronicles in the 80s and 90s and over 400 episodes.
It’s fascinating to go back and watch old episodes. This isn’t just a time capsule of retro-computing, they actually aired informative, highly technical, computer-oriented television on PBS like this episode from 1985 on UNIX.

Used to January 1 was the day that I would have to go on Facebook and explain to everyone that January 1 is not my birthday, because I didn't want to tell Facebook my birthday so I entered January 1, and so if Facebook gives them a popup suggesting they wish me a happy birthday they should not do that. However, now I no longer use Facebook, or for that matter any website which requires me to disclose my birthday, so this is not a problem I have anymore.

딱히 버는 만큼 소비하지도 않는 개인들에게 부가 집중된다는 것은 실질적으로 사회 전체의 경제규모가 축소되고 있음을 의미한다.

일론 머스크가 심각한 짓 계속 해도 트위터 못 놓는것, 카카오가 이상한짓 하거나 공적인 일에서도 많이 쓰이는데 여전히 proprietary로 잠겨있는 문제가 있는 카카오톡 못 놓는것, 마이크로소프트가 윈도우11에 하드웨어 제한 걸어놓고 광고 집어넣고 AI로 짠 코드로 기능 망가뜨려놔도 윈도우 못 놓는것, 미국이 고립주의 지향하는 심각한 나치 파시즘 국가로 변모하고 있는데도 미국 못 놓는것 다 비슷비슷한 문제이지 않나 싶네요. 의존성이 너무 높아져서 대안을 못찾거나 찾을생각조차 안하게 되는 상황
