CBC News world live is having a good panel right now. Talking about whether this threatens Canadian sovereignty in an even bigger way…

Last input from the panel from a reporter out of Alberta, Canada is not under direct threat…. But Mexico probably is given Trump’s comments today.

This is not how I wanted 2026 to start, but unlike 2024 and 2025 which started variously bad for various reasons… 2026 has started in a bad, but very predictable, way.

A few days ago, I made a post announcing that I'd opened a Monero wallet for BSD Cafe. I don't know much about crypto, but someone actually sent some Monero!

I used it to get a one-month VPN subscription, which is helping me test the geolocated resolutions for media.bsd.cafe and experiment with various optimizations.

"We are gonna run it", says Trump about Venezuela, after Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro has been abducted from Caracas by the US military.

Trump explains, that Venezuela has not been pumping enough oil, but this will change as the US is taking over.

We went from "Canada should be the 51st state" to "we are gonna run Venezuela" in months.

Who needs enemies, when any country can be invaded by the USA, whenever the Trump regime wants it's resources?

Is Greenland next?

NYT: "President Trump said the United States would “run” Venezuela “until such time that we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” following the U.S. military operation that captured the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife."

"Mr. Trump offered few details about how the United States would oversee Venezuela, saying only that “a group” would do so. It was not clear whether that would involve an occupying military force, but Mr. Trump said he was not afraid of “boots on the ground.”

the NYT, cont'd: Pressed by reporters on who would be running Venezuela, Trump points to his advisers standing behind him and says that for a “period of time” the “people that are standing right behind me, we’re going to be running it.”

Some of the advisers standing behind him include Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Trump said the United States would be a part of an unspecified “group” running Venezuela without providing details.

for over 500 years, imperial forces have humiliated, kidnapped, and murdered our local leaders to crush resistance and enable the systematic looting of our lands. gold, silver, pearls, coffee, bananas; today, oil: the main fuel of the insatiable monster they created, capitalism

despite massacres, betrayals, and setbacks, we have resisted and we will continue to resist for another 500 years if necessary. for the forest, for biodiversity, for collective life, and for our right to joy

Behold, a feeding frenzy of Plum Sharks!

Plum sharks AKA kererū, the NZ wood pigeon.

Plums are in full fruit in Ōtautahi-Christchurch city, NZ, at the moment. I was on Valley Road today in Cashmere there were at least 11 kererū feasting in the plum trees up the side of the road.

I think plums are one of the big reasons that these birds venture down from the hills into the city at this time of year.

1/n Okay, gang. We are on a train again.

Follow my journey through until I come up with a better hashtag. I'm open to suggestions, so please comment below if you have a good hashtag that also captures the moments that I am *not* on a train, for example b/c it was cancelled or delayed.

Before The Internet starts mansplaining Quiet Zones to me again: I always pay extra to reserve a seat in a Quiet Zone if I can, and find Quiet Zones to sit in if I cannot book a seat. I do not complain about people being loud in a Quiet Zone unless I have at least asked them to be quiet once, and they have decided to choose violence and be loud anyway.

If all that holiday stress has you craving a spa day, you’ll probably relate to the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata). Also known as the snow monkey, this species might be spotted on Japan’s Honshu, Shikoku, or Kyushu islands. Populations that inhabit northern regions have thick fur coats to protect them from cold weather.

But when this monkey needs a little extra warmth, it can be found soaking in natural hot springs. While bathing, this primate passes the time by socializing with members of its troop. Activities include grooming and playing. In fact, young macaques love to play, and have even been observed making snowballs for fun!
