What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Misinformation thrives in stressful times. I know we all want to share news right now but when you feel the urge to share something on your feed consider asking:

* Who posted this? Are they a reporter, or do they have what looks like a reliable source?
* Have you heard of this news site before?
* Where is this photo from? Did they take it? Could it be something other than what the poster claims? Is there a way you can tell if it is what it says it is?

RE: social.vivaldi.net/@nibushibu/

It's a delight to read that a user is having fun creating their own site.

Elsewhere this morning I saw, "The old web is people creating and sharing because they are intrinsically motivated." A significant intrinsic motivation can be the joy of creating something by hand.

@lcamtuflcamtuf :verified: :verified: :verified: anecdotal but this was my experience with SE (and other exchanges too). Toxic, pedantic, sexist, or just outright hostile, I only posted if desperate. After the nth time being called a moron or moron equivalent and I'm perfectly fine with this specific site being replaced by LLMs

Perl monks otoh is a wonderful community and a worthy example that tech forums don't have to be a cesspool of brogrammer insecurity.

@solitha @inthehandsPaul Cantrell Exactly. We will do it, but it takes time. But the EU knows how to do it. We did it with GPS > Galileo. We’ll do it with Visa/Mastercard > Digital Euro. And there are efforts in other areas. It’ll be slow, but it will happen. We learned from the pandemic, and we’re learning from the actions of the current US government. The US can’t be trusted anymore, sadly. Insularity will be a consequence, but so be it.

2. “The US has too much power, nobody can possibly stand up to them” → I don’t know, dude, maybe ask to copy Canada’s notes? I am not asking for magic here; I’m just asking people to try.

3. “But standing up to a fascist US is too expensive for us” → Believe me, whatever it costs us all now (inside •and• outside the US), it will cost even more later.

An excellent in-depth on the dangerous, unlawful U.S. attack on Venezuela. justsecurity.org/127981/intern 1/

“[S]triking Venezuela and abducting its president, is clearly a violation of the prohibition on the use of force in Article 2(4) of the UN Charter. That prohibition is the bedrock rule of the international system that separates the rule of law from anarchy, safeguards small States from their more powerful neighbors, and protects civilians from the devastation of war.”

ICE continues to terrorize MSP. It continues to be distressing and exhausting; the incredible volume of counter-organizing and community action continues to give me heart.

One thing that’s not surprising but I haven’t seen covered much: ICE is redlining. They swarm over very specific neighborhoods; the abductions (so far) happen almost entirely within clear boundaries. Those boundaries don’t entirely correspond to where immigrants live. They do, however, seem to correspond pretty closely to •political• boundaries that are / are not heavily white.

The biggest change in my lifetime which I have seen and experienced was going from a society where most people had a base level of trust. We have gone from that to *everything* being a scam by default and nothing you see or read is real.

iOS 7 era discourse did us a huge disservice by not separating skeuomorphism from pre-composed, asset-based UI – think Photoshop-exported 9-slices at multiple resolutions. If you want to consider bringing back the former you need to realize the latter is no longer viable (device variants, a11y, tooling)

Dune reading progress - book 5 - actively enjoying this one, actually! It's a different angle on the universe, and I'm pretty gripped. Let's see what I think by the end...

I plan to read up to and including book 6, then stop.
