Release v3.2.7 of Ktistec

Todd Sundsted @toddsundsted@epiktistes.com

The two big features in release v3.2.7 of Ktistec are back end support for creating polls (the front end is coming in the next release) and advanced theming support—specifically, a rich vocabulary of CSS class values and data attributes on which to build a theme. The full set is documented in the README. I'll post more on how I'm using these later this week.

Here is the full set of notable changes:

Added

  • Back-end support for creating polls.
  • Advanced theming support with new classes, data attributes, and view helpers.
  • Task status display on admin page showing running and imminently scheduled task counts.

Fixed

  • Poll vote form now correctly submits Question ID.

Changed

  • Move location of Ktistec version notice. (fixes #133)
  • Updated admin page for better accessibility and less clutter.

If you're running Windows and still using WinImage for handling basic floppy disk images, it is time to retire it. It served us well, but there is now a replacement called DiskImageTool that is superior in every conceivable way and is completely free and open source.

The latest version adds a small drag & drop feature I requested, and it's just the final touch that makes it a perfect replacement for me.

A screenshot of DiskImageTool's main interface. An "IMD" image of King's Quest is open. On the left we see a panel of basic disk information and some metadata extracted from the boot sector. On the right we see the contents of the FAT filesystem. Files can be dropped into the right pane to add them to the image.

"Is “People aren’t paying attention” just a dressed-up version of “People aren’t paying attention to me?

The suspicion that all this is élite anxiety in the face of a democratizing mediascape deepens when you consider what the attentionistas want people to focus on. ...When someone calls for audiences to be more patient, I instinctively think, Alternatively, you could be less boring."

An excellent piece by Daniel Immerwahr from last year.

Have you ever noticed that the food graphics in Super Smash Bros. and Kirby Air Riders is flat “billboarded” stock images of food? This artistic decision from director Masahiro Sakurai has persisted through 8 games over nearly 25 years.

While researching every game with this art style and all 150+ unique food images I ended up fixing wikis, reviewing a seasonal KitKat flavor, and preserving an uncatalogued image of tempura soba.

All of this resonated for me, but I think this is important to keep hold of, as well:

"One of the great gifts of working in technology is that it’s given so many of us the habit of constantly learning, of always being curious and paying attention to the new things worth discovering."

It really can be a gift, and that's worth thinking about.

Mastodon's verification system is mainly for people and organisations who who have their own website. It makes your Mastodon profile's link to your website turn green, proving you are the owner of the site.

Here's how to verify your account:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-a

If you've tried doing this and it didn't work, see the troubleshooting section of the guide ("My website address won’t turn green!") as there are lots of possible ways you might fix it.

RE: mastodon.social/@Mastodon/1157

Something I like about and the as a whole is how it highlights the importance of community. A lot of these server owners are running these servers out of pocket because they love the idea of supporting a community. It takes all of us to keep the fediverse running, so don't forget to donate to your smaller servers as well!

RE: hachyderm.io/@molly0xfff/11584

Always a good time to start your own blog. And if you're worried about not having anything interesting to write about, here's a story I like to share when that comes up.

"A funny thing happens with history in that the most mundane, ubiquitous parts of daily life are the things that we've kind of lost the most because nobody wrote about them."

I’ve been doing Hungryroot every other week for a few months and I feel like I’m going to stick with it for the foreseeable future unlike Hello Fresh because I feel like it’s actually helping me lose weight, it makes it super easy to meal plan, I get to customize every item (not just meal but each item) in my order if I want, I often get grocery items that last multiple weeks not tiny portions just for that meal, and I like that they include vegan items and items from minority owned businesses
