Just FYI: this is part of the damage being done by extractive AI companies. Their scraper bots routinely DDOS us, and they multiply to take up as much bandwidth as is available. We are having to put a huge percentage of our developers’ time into just keeping the site alive rather than building its future. They are actively destroying everything worthwhile about the internet. @helloKnowledge Commons hcommons.social/@hello/1158546

“npm install our project dependencies. Download this 5GB file onto your five year-old laptop. Install docker. Build and start the containe—”

You bolt awake in the mountains of Carthage. You are not online. It is 217 BC. You are the general Hannibal, and you have changed your mind. The future cannot come to pass. Rome must burn.

I'm having trouble eating in the morning these days. One thing I can reliably eat is a cookie. I'm pulling up recipes for breakfast cookies and so many of them are like NO SUGAR NO BUTTER. Listen I want to be healthy but I also need life to be worth living ok

@glyph @luis_in_briefLuis Villa @sophSophia J. Turner @zkatkat @joepie91Sven Slootweg ("still kinky and horny anyway") when I bring the threat of self-defeating factionalization below, it is exactly this scenario that I'm worried about mastodon.social/@whitequark/11

@whitequark✧✦Catherine✦✧ @luis_in_briefLuis Villa @sophSophia J. Turner @zkatkat @joepie91Sven Slootweg ("still kinky and horny anyway") I do think that we need to normalize the thing that you said: a license grant is not a solemn promise of fealty. People need to be more comfortable saying to nazis "Yes, the project is MIT licensed, and yes, that means you *can* use it. But you and everyone who works with you is banned from the issue tracker and if I see you at a conference I will continuously ring a loud bell and scream 'shame!' in your face until you leave"
