the mountain has a ton of ufo kitsch and it's in a very pretty region that doesn't get a lot of tourists.
their "most powerful tool, the DAP (Data Acquisition Project) camera" is a ceiling-mount dome-style security camera that they put upside down on some railing.
They climb up a small mountain with a touristy alien shrine on top, put the dome camera on the railing, then fly a helicopter over to "check from the sky for anomalous objects."
They find a silvery object! moving east to west! and then the next cut they show planes flying (possibly the same object???) and spend the rest of the episode saying "what were those planes? were they military jets being scrambled to chase a ufo??? we can never know, but we think it was ufos."
Not once do they check ADS-B flight tracking or try to sniff ACARS messages, which would have explained who was flying, in what direction, and what they were talking about.
Every few minutes they get consultation from a man who I can only describe as an FMV game character.
Truly wonderful trash tv.

『호모 루덴스, 놀이하는 인간을 꿈꾸다』는 『호모 루덴스』의 해설서입니다. 호모 루덴스는 그렇게 어려운 책은 아니었지만, 그래도 해설서를 읽는 것이 이 책이 어떤 맥락에서 쓰였는지 도움이 되기 때문에 고르게 되었습니다.
이 책은 하위징아가 『호모 루덴스』의 생각에 도달하게 된 여러 배경과 시대적 상황, 책의 구조, 나아가 비판점과 한계, 현대에 대한 제안까지 포함하고 있습니다. 본문에서 주장의 근거에 해당했던 구체적 사례들은 저자의 언어로 풀어 설명하고 있고요. 여러모로 읽기 편한 책입니다.
읽으면서 어떤 생각을 하게 됩니다. 일단 원래 저작의 '호모 루덴스'가 의미를 가질 수 있도록 대립항이 되는 '호모 파베르'의 존재입니다. 다른 하나는 하위징아는 나치를 타락한 호모 루덴스로 보았다는 사실입니다.(pp.190-191) 로마식 경례로 대표되는 나치 특유의 미학은 오늘날까지도 영향력을 미치고 있는 놀이 요소입니다. 그리고 그것은 전간기 독일에서 나치당이 집권하게 된 과정과 밀접하게 연관을 짓고 있지요. 그러한 징조는 2020년대에도 대한민국과 미국을 포함한 여러 곳에서 재현되는 것처럼 보이지요. 『거대한 퇴보』 생각도 납니다. 그리고 그렇게 모은 '자발적인' 참여를 기반으로 인간들은 다른 인간들을 효율적으로 죽일 방법을 고민하고, 비용과 이득에 대해 생각합니다. 그렇습니다. 저는 호모 루덴스의 열정이 호모 파베르에게 종사하는 것을 두려워합니다.
잠깐 다른 이야기를 하자면 저는 제가 호모 루덴스나 놀이하는 사람이라고 생각하지 않습니다. 저는 혼자 놉니다. 하위징아는 놀이는 사회적 행동이라고 보았죠.(pp.62-63) 저는 게임을 많이 합니다만, 혼자 하는 게임을 많이 할 뿐더러, (제가 게임 쪽에서 호모 루덴스에 접근해서 생기는 논점이지만) 비디오 게임과 놀이는 구분해서 보아야 합니다.
그 구분을 전제하고 봐야 하지만, 게이미피케이션이라 불리는 분야는 그 자체가 호모 루덴스의 열정을 호모 파베르에게 종사시키는 행위입니다. 스탬프를 모으게 만들어서 매출을 올리려는 행위로부터, 서비스에 대한 지식을 묻는 퀴즈를 맞추면 스탬프를 더 주는 행위, 매일 접속해서 이자 받기 버튼을 누르게 만드는 행위에 외국어 학습 앱이 하루에 한 번 체스 게임을 하게 만드는 행위는 모두 닿아 있습니다.
다른 측면으로 게시판의 추천 버튼이 게시판 사용자들의 의견을 동조시키는 효과와, 웃기는 밈이 어떻게 사람들 사이에 퍼져나갈 수 있는지, 인터넷 사용자들이 단체로 어떤 일을 할 수 있는지는 무서울 정도로 파괴적이지요. 이것을 본인들의 이익을 위해 활용하려 한 사례를 우리는 알고 있습니다. 당분간은 이런 것들을 더 보게 되겠지요.
하위징아가 이런 사례를 '타락한' 호모 루덴스로 보고, 순수한 열정을 되살리는 것을 (그 때의) 해결책으로 본 것은, 이 책의 저자가 지적한 엘리트주의적 한계가 엿보이는 부분일까요. 오늘날 호모 루덴스를 수행하는 사람의 대다수는 동시에 호모 파베르입니다. 그가 꿈꾼 순수한 열정은 되살릴 수 없어 보입니다: 우리의 삶의 조건은 끊임없이 우리에게 효율을 요구하고 '놀이' 대신 '노동을 위한 재충전'을 속삭일 것이기 때문입니다. 우리는 단순히 호모 루덴스를 되살리면 안 됩니다. 그것은 호모 파베르에 대한 엄격한 감시와 견제 속에서 이루어져야 하며, 그 방법론은 우리가 지금 떠올릴 수 있는 것보다 더욱 구체적이어야 합니다.
저자는 디지털 공간의 오타쿠들을 호모 파베르의 지배를 벗어난 호모 루덴스로 보았지만(p.263), 저는 비관적입니다. 놀이는 사회적이고, 사회는 그 하부구조의 지배를 받을 수밖에 없기 때문이지요. 오타쿠들의 놀이에 돈이 들어가고 먹고 사는 데 돈이 필요한 이상, 그 어떤 놀이도 부분적으로 자발적일 수밖에 없으며, 지배자들의 흥미가 그저 여기까지 닿지 않은 상태일 것이라고 생각합니다.

NSW Police arrived with reinforcements for a "welfare check." Their victim didn't want to talk to them, retreated into the house, and armed himself with a broken bottle and a screwdriver.
So they shot him to death. Because that's what they do.
At no time was he required to talk to them, let them into his house, or accept them on his property. "No, fuck off," is a perfectly adequate and legal response when unwanted police show up.
