@hittitezombierandom thoughts @kyle_pegasusKyle @davidgerard @EF @Tubemeister @TheEntityEntitas Bold assumption that a FLOSS system will ever finish as opposed to hit the 30% done mark at which point there is enough tech debt and complexity accumulated from absorbing the actual variety in the user base without cheating that hacking on it is no longer "fun" so someone gets the bright idea to rewrite it all "so it' simpler" and restart the cycle.

I went to Seattle for SEAGL a couple of months ago. I took the Link light rail from SeaTac to the university district where my hotel was. The train was about half full. I spent most of the time on my phone catching up on Fediverse posts, texts and email.

In the NYT interview published yesterday, Trump openly admitted that his thirst for Greenland is not about military necessity, national security or business opportunities but simply his psychological need to own it.

I think that Trump is looking to secure his legacy as the (in his own mind at least) greatest president ever and adding Greenland would not only make America greater, literally, but also make it a bit bigger than Canada. In other words, a pure vanity project.

Today's Search Engine and Hard Fork podcasts were super fun to listen to!!

Excited that @CaseyCasey Newton @kevinKevin Roose and @pj are building their own Mastodon instance called the Forkiverse.

And I absolutely loved the vibe coding experiments Casey and Kevin did to make their own personal web sites (cnewton.org and kevinroose.com)

Feels like we are taking some of the best aspects of the internet we loved and lost and bringing them together with new tech in ways that are incredibly promising for the internet going forward. Bravo.

Must listen.

Gandhi påminner.

When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, the always fall. Think of it - always.

i think the most surprising-to-me decision we ended up making while writing this Git data model was to not mention the .git directory at all jvns.ca/blog/2026/01/08/a-data

in the past i’ve taken the approach of “let’s learn how Git works by talking about how .git is structured”, but actually lots of Git data can be stored in multiple ways in .git (for example there are 2 ways branches can be stored) and actually for the most part it just isn’t that useful to know.
