the best/worst one was where i had three features that relied on each other, and i had implemented 1 and 2, but not 3. Claude said "hey so, the way you built 2 may make building 3 hard, we may want to revise 2 before we go on to 3" and it was 100% right, I hadn't considered a requirement

Trying not to be nostalgic but this certainly feels like back then.

60 years old
Had an internet startup in 1994-96 doing dial up, then selling fractional T1s and fell into web design (ugly, bad) and helped on first websites for Pete's Wicked Ale, Sunkist (survey boy!), Disney, Orange County Register. Lived through the Pentium FDIV bug while trying to learn kernel compile and Tumpet Winsock. Usenet!

My first meaningful online community was radioparadise.com.

spent the whole afternoon debugging what I thought was a bug in my code but it turns out if you call Promise.finally() nodejs will treat the rejection of that promise as unhandled and crash your program, regardless of whether it is handled or not. is this supposed to be intentional?

I’m sure having to post a lot of links to this one:

hachyderm.io/@inthehands/11586

People are getting really confused about this. When I say “pretext,” I don’t mean for individual ICE officers. I mean that the Trump regime still (!!) does not have enough popular support and political cover to cross certain lines. They’re finding themselves genuinely stymied by federal courts and state govs, Congress is getting less (not more!) quiescent, they’re finding themselves unable to control the press, and popular support is collapsing.

Saying “the situation is already extremely dire” is true and important. Saying “they’ve already achieved total authoritarian control” is wrong, dangerous, and an invitation to give up when we most need people active.

@inthehandsPaul Cantrell It also doesn't help that they've already kidnapped many of "the worst" criminal immigrants, and more and more they're kidnapping perfectly normal people - oftentimes who are completely legally here, working jobs, paying taxes, whatever. It's becoming harder to paint everyone as some dangerous gang member when they're like ... A person who cleans houses and missed a paperwork filing deadline one time 10 years ago.

@inthehandsPaul Cantrell We are still in the 'Consolidating power' phase, which means that consolidation *can* still fail, and their base fragmenting over things like the pedophile president's attempts to cover up the epstein files matter; he has not taken full control, and the more loyalists he loses, the harder it becomes for him to actually finish consolidating power.

Welcome, peeps. It's great to have you here!

To help you get acclimatised, here are a few handy tips:

* Please pick up your blåhaj from the catgirl at the door. Don't worry, they won't bite. Unless you're into that.

* Being callous and unthinking will get you swiftly and indefinitely muted and/or blocked.

* Please remember to use content warnings as needed, and add alt text to photos.

* Photos of moss, windows, and silent scenes are always appreciated.

* Praise John Mastodon

Do you know what’s better than snow served outdoors? Snow served indoors!

Knold has actually been requesting snow as if it’s a treat. We don’t know what to do when all the snow is gone🫠

Closeup of a grey Siberian cat (Knold) sitting next to an open door. On the doormat in front of him is a black bowl with a load of fresh snow. Knold is looking out of the door, but his tongue is slightly out in anticipation. He is very fluffy, especially his large majestic mane.Closeup of a grey Siberian cat (Knold) sitting in front of a black bowl with a load of fresh snow placed on a doormat. Welcome, everyone joining the !

The is like any social media in that the "algorithm" gets better the more you "train" it. And by "algorithm" I mean cool people & hashtags you can follow (yes, you can follow hashtags, it's awesome!), and by "train" it I mean boost any post you enjoy.

The more you boost and others boost, the more good stuff bubbles to the top and even goes viral. (Yes, stuff on Mastodon etc. can go viral! It's possible!)

Most importantly: HAVE FUN!! 😊🎉

hey forkiverse.

I'm a long time fan of PJ's (listened to the first episode of reply all as a 14 year old and have followed his stuff since) and also a fan of hard fork.

I'm a software engineer at Unless.com here in the Netherlands and I'm working to build a cooperative software and design agency that's focused on meaningful work.

keep on forking motherforkers

I can't stop smiling, @kevinKevin Roose, @CaseyCasey Newton & @pj. The name is absolutely hilarious. 🤭

This brings back the ease that technology otherwise lacks!

Again for the benifit of the new people here's the thing with the fediverse, you're going to have to put in a little more work to curate your experience. However the payoff is that you're going to get much better, more authentic engagement from real people. I've had a presence on all the platforms and this where I hang out exclusively. Bottom line it is what you make it.
