one thing i don’t see talked about a lot is the psychological aftereffects of exposure to AI “for work”. i actually don’t know if we know what they are. i don’t mean psychotic episodes it triggers in some or the delusions etc. i feel like i get some kind of… hangover of uncanny. like i ate plastic

I am conflicted on the Grok thing. We need to collectively grapple with the reality that this technology will, within a decade, be available in all consumer devices and on-demand in future AR wearables, however unfortunate that may be. It is more important to consider the inevitability of that and the implications and feasibility of building computers that cannot do that.

Our existing laws should be enforced, yes. But we really need to consider what winning looks like.

This week I gave nearly the same talk to amateur astronomers (Monday) and to professional astronomers (Thursday). It's super depressing, all about satellites crashing in orbit, pieces falling on us on the ground, atmospheric pollution and how the law really doesn't help us at all with any of this.

While the talk for amateurs was depressing, everyone kept their spirits up, and seemed somewhat energized by the list of possible actions I provided at the end of the talk.

『장송의 프리렌』 15권이 나와 읽게 되었습니다.

프리렌은 꽤 독특한 만화라고 생각하는데, 일반적으로 자주 언급되는 '액션씬이 구리다'는 표현을 포함해서, 어떤 장면을 보여주고 어떤 장면을 생략하는지에 대해 다른 많은 일본 만화들과 기준이 다르다는 감각이 있습니다. 작은 컷 안에서 몇 개월씩 시간을 흘려보내는 만화니만큼 새삼스러운 이야기일 수도 있는데, 그것만으로는 조금 설명하기 어렵다고 느끼는 지점이 있습니다.

여행 에피소드처럼 단편 에피소드가 아니라 여러 화에 걸쳐서 이야기가 진행되는 경우, 저는 그 과정에서 등장한 인물을 거의 잊어버리는 경향이 있습니다. 유벨 같은 캐릭터는 매우 독특한 캐릭터인데 얘는 왜 이런 캐릭터였는지를 잊어버려서(이유는 모르겠는데 1급 마법사 시험 편이 머리속에서 완전히 지워져 있었습니다), 자인 같은 캐릭터는 잠깐 동행했다가 왜 지금 다시 나오는지 모르겠어서 복습을 해야 했습니다. 승려 자리를 자인을 위해 비워놓는다는 언급까지 있는 캐릭터였는데… 왜 하나도 기억이 안 날까….

제리에 암살계획 편은 여러모로 등장인물들의 다른 면모가 보여서 새로운 긴장감으로 읽을 수 있는 편입니다. 이야기가 어떻게 전개되고 정리될지 기대하며 읽게 됩니다.
