Exactly 20 years ago today, jQuery was announced to the world!

🧵 Thread:

jQuery was announced at BarCamp NYC on January 14, 2006 by John Resig @jeresigJohn Resig, and is now maintained by the jQuery Team including Timmy @timmywilTimmy Willison, Michał @mgol and myself (on the infra side).

Usage still grows every year, both in traffic (via the jQuery CDN) and number of distinct sites overall (incl self-hosted and other CDNs).

It’s time I crank up the search for new work to 11, because wow I really need it.

Bottom line: you bring me aboard your web publishing or software team because there are many fires vying for your attention and I figure out which ones to put out first.

My CV: jaredwhite.com/cv/
My biz site: whitefusion.studio

I'm design-focused: smooth fast UX & providing delightful experiences. Deep frontend, full-stack, and open source expertise.

Boosts greatly appreciated!

I've been having a lovely day installing the lunixen on the new laptop, and I'm hereby revising my recommendation list for Linux distros:

That's it. That's the entire list. No need for more.

Specifically, I'm no longer recommending Mac refugees try Elementary, having now tried it myself this side of the oughties. For the same reason, I'm now actively advising against Linux Mint, and any other distro whose touchpad settings default to "Natural Scrolling", you disgusting perverts.

Periodic reminder that Newsom sucks.

Gavin Newsom comes out swinging against California billionaire tax:

In interviews with Politico and the New York Times, [Kimberly Guilfoyle's ex-husband] described his office's efforts to kill the proposed billionaire tax and told the Times he would "do what I have to do to protect [rich people's yacht money]". As a direct-to-voters ballot initiative, Newsom would not have the power to veto the tax if the proposal passed...

As Iran’s violent crackdown intensifies, amid unprecedented sociopolitical and economic uprisings nationwide, we speak with Alp Toker @atokerAlp Toker :mastodon:
, Director of @netblocks , who describes a sophisticated campaign by Iranian authorities to block all digital communications, a strategic move to crush dissent and control the national and global narrative.

Where the fuck does this pernicious myth that Microsoft is somehow secretly controlling the PSF come from? To keep coming up so reliably, with absolutely zero evidence, it honestly seems like some kind of coordinated disinfo campaign.

Hi hello, I'm Bridget from Los Angeles! At 27, I'm taking my first steps on Mastodon.

I recently quit my desk job to reimagine my life outside of corporate America. As such, I've got spare time to reimagine the internet alongside you fine folk. No spare money though. Womp.

I'm a writer (or will be once the burnout subsides), interested in the brain, identity, culture and empathy.

Hobby harpist+violinist. Always down some research rabbit hole. Occasionally funny!

From my perspective, the ATProto social graph would be more useful as a "find your friends" across apps, not necessarily auto-follow. Rather than sending all your contacts to every app, you can choose which of your apps to "recommend" follows from.

Really happy to see that the Dutch research and education community is growing on Mastodon.

Thanks, @wlaatjeWladimir Mufty, for compiling this overview of 80 universities, research organizations, libraries, faculties, research groups, and individual academics who are (some more, some less) active on Mastodon.
