“The fight we're having as a nation about Renee Good's Murder, about whether our shiny new secret police are allowed to kill those who seek to shine a light on their conduct with impunity? If we lose this fight, we don't move a little bit in the direction of a fascist society. We move a lot in that direction. We would cover, I think, a huge portion of the distance between where we are now and something like Nazi Germany, in a single step.”

So far since posting my video on the 1U rackmount Pico GPS clock, I've tested 0.08, 0.12, and 0.20mm thick filament "lenses" (pictured below), a tinted plastic tape, kapton, and car window tint.

Interesting findings; do you think it's worth a follow up on L2J?

Anyone know if there's an "Anna's Archive"-type free repository for standards documents, like from UL, CSA, IEC, ISO, etc? You know, the ones that are mostly developed with public subsidies but then are paywalled at absolutely ludicrous prices that mean only big companies can actually get access to them?

Searching a bit didn't find anything for me.

Asking for a friend ... 😃

Okay, so earlier I saw the announcement of Anthropic's grant/sponsorship/agreement with the PSF.

I had a few thoughts on another thread, but decided to expound my thoughts on my blog.

Caution, there's also a sidequest there which was initially unplanned for, but such is life...

‘No organised, viable opposition inside Iran that can take over immediately’

Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group, says the Iranian people are “caught between a repressive regime and foreign aggression”.

“If the president [Trump] decides to do political decapitation in Iran, what comes after? There’s no organised, viable opposition inside Iran that can take over immediately.”

RE: fosstodon.org/@ThePSF/11588791

Some are commenting that this isn't enough, it's not impressive, etc. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

I'm all for corporations doing more commensurate with their earnings and benefits they get. But regardless of Anthropic's size and our ideas of what they could have given, this investment makes a huge difference to the PSF and should be applauded.

ohkk.jp/all/

i find it somewhat amusing that very often, when someone has a Weird Linux Runtime Issue, they can send the binaries to me and i can figure it out in a matter of ~minutes

somewhere along the way i've become a build system / dynamic linker expert and i'm not really sure how. i guess i just like to understand the shit i use?

my grandmother once complained that windows 95 is a step down from MS-DOS because you can no longer "fully understand the system" but (a) i bet she did not "fully" understand MS-DOS either and (b) clealy i can understand both Linux and Windows enough on an architectural level to do things like "trace the path of a syscall or a driver ioctl through the entire chain" which is a level that usually gets you where you want it, or close at least
