"Assist the war effort by feeding this poisoned training data to web crawlers."

Poisoning data sets is just one of many ways of AI resistance, instructions provided here: rnsaffn.com/poison3/

More info: theregister.com/2026/01/11/ind
"Those behind the Poison Fountain project contend that regulation is not the answer because the technology is already universally available. They want to kill AI with fire, or rather poison, before it's too late." 🔥

@mcc @rcombsRidley @ WATCH LYCORECO
idk how fun this one is, but long ago, in the days of a.out shared libraries, running a program with empty argv (argc==0) did the same thing as ldd. i accidentally ran into this when playing with inetd.conf without understanding why the program name appeared twice (second for argv[0]). a magic environment variable is such an improvement.

Sounds scary!

arstechnica.com/security/2026/

However, warning signs this is sensationliased scaremongering:

  1. Published by Ars Technica.
  2. Ars does not mention anything about how this scary malware is supposed to infect machines.
  3. The researchers' blog post does not mention anything about how this scary malware is supposed to infect machines.
  4. The underlying "research paper" does not mention anything about how this scary malware is supposed to infect machines.
  5. The report is from a "security company" who just so happens to sell a product that mitigates this scary malware that doesn't seem to have a way to infect machines.

The UK government's climbdown over mandatory Digital ID is a victory for ORG and other groups that warned of the threats to everyone's civil liberties.

BUT questions still remain.

Despite this latest U-turn, neither the scheme nor the giant pricetag have gone away entirely.

I am bigoted against LLMs.
I know it and it is how I deal with the hype.
Meaning I can't constantly be reasonable and
figure out what is meant and the context of LLMs
and what people think about them.
It drains my brain power from other things.

And I have continually found nothing compelling.

Worse, I have typically found very frustrating
examples of people using very strong but implied
assumptions and using logic that depends utterly
on using blinders and ignoring reason.

Until the hype dies, I am not interested in them.

I am still interested in the old AI stuff like
for example path finding, NNs, and markov chains.

RE: mastodon.social/@grheavyroller

@pluralisticCory Doctorow summing up my thoughts on where the current conversation is leading us towards:

I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

I don't have any advice for how to do that. I'm sorry!

In simple terms, once again, why you can stick your “” (more precisely: and ) up to where the sun doesn't shine. None of this is unclear, everything has long been publicly known and documented:

” is a speculative bubble that causes massive damage to the and ; cheats people out of the wages for their labor and their art; contaminates and corrupts the acquisition, maintenance, and dissemination of knowledge like microplastics, not even stopping at your brains; and financially yields several orders of magnitude less than it costs. It is not even remotely viable on its own and ultimately hopes for permanent financing through the squandering of taxpayer money, as soon as “the market” has had enough of fuzzy promises of "returns", and no longer wants to “invest.”

You like “AI” because it produces plausible-sounding and plausible-looking bullshit and because you have learned in the 21st century that you can get away with it, provided you don't give a damn about future generations. In the end, you'll be left without even a hint of the illusion that immense amounts of money have been wasted here on something “systemically important,” as was the case last time.
