What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

It's 2026, and I still have to teach young folks to manage files on their computers. Four times in the last week I've had to sit with someone and show them how to copy, cut, paste, rename files, etc.

Wasn't this generation supposed to have grown up with and understand this tech?

description of mistreatment and trauma of a trans child

I like to put a lot of effort into my presentation slides but I think this time I've outdone myself. These are so good. Their existence alone tells a story.

The utilitarian layout, the flawed laser print, the additional artifacts from photo-copying, the dust, the scratches, the marker, the tape. It all comes together into something resembling an old file from some dusty archive

And it'll come to live on an old overhead projector.

a portrait-orientation slide (a4 format) showing a childs drawing of a person in a dark dress surrounded by strips of chinese writing.

text says:

(blacked out name), written by hand: "Jenny"

printed:

“Hi, I'm Dr. A. And you must be Johnny.”

Jenny cried inconsolably and,
amid her tears, admonished her
parents for their betrayal:
“You told!
 You told!” (red highlight)

- five years old
- said she was a girl since two years old
- resentful about being seen as a boy
- self-harmin suicidal
- parents generally supportive, but struggling
- did not first come out to her parents

🤘 It's Changelog & Friends!

Mat Ryer is back and he brought his impromptu musical abilities with him! We discuss Rob Pike vs thankful AI, Microsoft's GitHub monopoly (and what it means for open source), and Tom Tunguz' 12 predictions for 2026: agent-first design, the rise of vector databases, and are we about to pay more for AI than people?!

I run `git lfs status`. I believe this will show me, out of the changed items in `git status`, whether they're going to be committed to LFS or to regular git.

A new file, CompileShaders.targets, is listed with an "LFS:" line, suggesting it's going into LFS. ".targets" is an XML file consumed by msbuild, it should go into regular git. I don't see anything in .gitattributes that would give this file the LFS nature.

What am I missing?

hi and folks!

are there any organizations that work in the online privacy, , and/or digital sovereignty spaces?

basically like the EFF, but Canadian; the Chaos Computer Club, but Canadian; you get the idea.

The CCLA seems to be doing some work on this (ccla.org/our-work/privacy/), but I am looking for more targeted/focused orgs.

There's also openprivacy.ca/work/, which I had not heard of.

Boosts OK & encouraged! Thank you!

RE: hachyderm.io/@pythonbynight/11

multiple level of citations here but the quote from antirez makes my blood boil

> But I also look forward to the good AI could bring: new progress in science, that could help lower the suffering of the human condition, which is not always happy.

WE DON'T NEED NEW SCIENCE FOR THAT YOU DONKEY, WE NEED TO REDISTRIBUTE CAPITAL

Okay, so earlier I saw the announcement of Anthropic's grant/sponsorship/agreement with the PSF.

I had a few thoughts on another thread, but decided to expound my thoughts on my blog.

Caution, there's also a sidequest there which was initially unplanned for, but such is life...

One area where cell phones could still actually innovate is support for mesh networks:
• Allow people to communicate locally whenever there is no cell phone reception (during outages, in remote areas, in overcrowded areas)
• Bonus: support for peer-to-peer synchronization of data (files, contacts, notes, etc.)—e.g., between a laptop and a cellphone.
