Whenever I see the stats about people who do or don’t believe that some “officer-involved shooting” was “justified” I wonder how different the answers would be if the question was “do you believe the right punishment for this offence is summary execution without trial”.

Elon Musk: "I'm a free speech absolutist!" Also Elon Musk: "Anyone who teaches students that America was built on stolen land is guilty of treason and should be imprisoned." Look, some of us tried to warn people that Elon Musk doesn't care one bit about free speech. But did anyone listen?

Elon Musk saying:

Teaching people to hate America fundamentally destroys patriotism and the desire to defend our country.

Such teachings should be viewed as treason and those who do it imprisoned.

This is a quote tweet of someone saying:

In 2022, 45% of high schoolers polled say they were taught that "America is built on stolen land" in class at school, and another 22% heard it from an adult there.

Holy crap, the vibe coders are really starting to go off the deep end. This is a real paragraph written by a real vibe-coder about a real vibe coding tool he is vibe coding.

'“Idle polecats” is an example of a heresy that plagues Gas Town. There is no such thing as an idle polecat; it’s not a pool, and they vanish when their work is done. But polecats do have long-term identities, so it’s more like they are clocking out and leaving the building between jobs, which is harder for agents to wrap their heads around. So “idle polecats” make it back into the code base, comments, and docs all the time.'

Hey. Do you have "The Criterion Channel"?

Cuz I'm looking at the films that are leaving at the end of January:

criterionchannel.com/leaving-j

And there is some *fire* stuff:

- Ran
- The King of Comedy
- In a Lonely Place

So that's:

- Kurosawa's best color film
- Scorsese explaining the last ten years
- Bogart doing a complex, harrowing portrayal of an abuser (I actually like this more than The Big Sleep!)

Also some Howard Hawks, some of it pre-Code. Not so familiar but he's supposed to be good…?

I don't keep up with MySQL development, but I have had many conversations over the years about why so many people defend MySQL as being a good "Open Source" project... and yet I'm glad someone is writing about it. 🍿

I have to give it to (most) modern gadgets (devices) - their lifespans are pretty good these days. Here's one example - my wife is still using my almost 10 years old iPad Pro (1st) gen quite actively every day and it works pretty well. (despite no longer receiving OS updates since 2023) My father uses my old iPhone XS and my old Apple Watch 3 (4?) and they serve him well overall.

Most laptops and phones can easily do 5+ years, battery degradation aside. And Kindles (and alternatives) can pull much longer.

Of course, that doesn't matter much, as our society encourages us to buy the latest and greatest gadgets each year…
