What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Instagram makes billions but ignores basic video accessibility: proper closed captions, audio descriptions. Features are missing, even though Meta could easily build them. But it’s unlikely to happen until the regulatory or public pressure becomes financially too great to ignore. by Chris Yoog

It's funny how the stock markets work sometimes. Little has changed for in the past year (other than a few external financial injections), yet the stock price has almost tripled (from a low of $18 to the current $49).

Personally, I've lost faith in the recovery plan after former CEO Pat Gelsinger got ousted (I think he's a great leader and had a pretty good vision for the company), but I still hope that Intel will recover in the long run. Healthy competition in the semiconductor sector is important for everyone. And if could recover from the brink of bankruptcy to the powerhouse that they are today, then truly impossible is nothing!

I'm haunted by the realisation that, although my parents died just before the referendum, they both would have voted Leave. It's unfairly tainted my memory of them. That last decade parroting Daily Mail headlines. I'm so angry at those who poison the thoughts of good people.

There's something that bugs me. People who don't agree with LLMs have to hear that they should learn it or be left behind.

But people who fight against EVs in favour of Internal Combustion Engine cars don't get the same treatment.

Is it because not using LLMs and driving EVs is more feminine coded?

It would make sense since the former has a lot of potential to cause harm and the other is about protecting the planet.

RE: social.numerique.gouv.fr/@Inse

I want all untrusted code on my computer to run in a sandbox.

- Website? Sandbox.
- Dependencies? Sandbox.
- Plugins? Sandbox.

I casually keep up with the AI space for work, and the amount of unsandboxed / local code execution routinely being executed seems like such a bad idea. Like, that’s going to go horrifically wrong at some point. Even if it’s too complex to predict how exactly it'll go wrong.

i'm probably going to be told tomorrow that i'm being laid off, so if anyone has a lead on a decent remote embedded software engineering or unix/linux systems job, i've got a resume to send you.

i don't like discussing the specifics of who my past clients have been in public. however, my most recent position was contracting with the kernel team of a major CDN and cloud services provider that i know many people on fedi are also current or former employees of, maintaining their internal linux distribution (an customized Ubuntu downstream) for their custom server platforms, porting forward and cleaning up patchsets to newer versions of the distribution, fixing issues in toolchains and libraries, etc.

i've also done embedded software work for a large variety of devices including medical, cellular technology, and industrial control equipment, in addition to some consumer products. i've done board bringup and BSP development with Yocto/Openembedded, Buildroot, FreeRTOS, etc, on most major SoC and microcontroller families. when doing business logic, I am most comfortable in C and Lua, but fine working with C++ codebases, and can learn to work with other languages if a project needs it.

boosts appreciated.
