What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

The flat design revolution, which is now so deeply embedded in UI/UX we no longer bother to name it, has now moved its quest to make all icons monochrome, abstract and denuded of detail to the point where the "profile" icon for Tidal now appears to be some sort of glyph of a insect or fairy

Following historical trends, before long these icons will start to be used as analogues for their sounds, creating the basis of a primitive alphabet. What you see below will someday be the character for "P".

"Trump and his enablers have made a grievous miscalculation about the level of support for their dictatorial tactics. A strong majority of Americans oppose what ICE is doing and how it is conducting its operations."

"The only way to correctly predict the future is to pave it, is to brave it. So we have to have the courage to be able to stand up for not only ourselves, but for our friends, the members of our community, for strangers."

"Minneapolis is really taking it on the chin for most of the rest of us. The reason the streets of my own dense liberal enclave are not ringing out with shouts and whistles is because Trump’s 'day of reckoning' isn’t being fought here—yet."

"We are edging closer to crossing that fateful line when the military is called to put down civil unrest that has not just been provoked but sought after by a president eager to use retributive violence against his political foes while DHS puts out snuff videos that are, as Greg Sargent put it," (continued in 31)

one use of LLMs I don't quite understand is calendar management. my calendar is pretty nuts, but I'm not *that* busy, I can keep it myself. If i was busier I would like to have a human with a heart to take care of it, hopefully someone who cares about my well-being. but a robot seems particularly ill suited for calendar management, a vibes-based endeavor.

This New York Times video journalism -- caution, it's graphic -- about Trump goons' murder of a Minneapolis woman is essential. No both-sides bullshit when one party -- the regime and its vile propagandists -- is relentlessly and provably lying.

I'm often hard on the Times for its relentless failures to properly cover this regime, but this piece is the real thing.

scaled to 600px so @pj can afford his hosting bill. 😅

Edit: Someone asked for dog pics and I failed to reply to their original post and now I can't find it 😭. I love how all the modern "old man shouts at clouds" problems with social media don't go away just because we're on an island (peninsula?) now. 😂

Edit2: If anyone knows how to ONLY show theforkiverse posts, please let me know. Trending is really cool but it's also littered with a bunch of stuff that's baity.

“The thing that excites me the most is the idea of a landscape of local public libraries and public institutions in general being more involved in supporting music. If we could easily take a record out of the library digitally, it would be such a net good for culture. Maybe that is an area that’s worth giving some organizing energy to, even more so than trying to reform these streaming companies.” hearingthings.co/liz-pelly-on-

Better watch out next time you use WiFi on a plane. Because it's broadcasted unencrypted across the area of an entire continent via a satellite link. And it can be received using of the shelf TV satellite dishes.

Good part is: private connections are mostly encrypted due to stuff like Let's Encrypt.

Bad part: critical infrastructure doesn't use Let's Encrypt.
