유사 사례인 2021년 텍사스 한파 사례와 비교해보면 굉장한 유사성을 찾을 수 있습니다. 2021년 2월 한파 당시 AO Index는 -5.3, MJO는 7~8 Phase, PDO/ENSO는 Negative / La Nina 였어요. 세 가지 요인이 모두 동일합니다.
문제는 노카옌입니다. 지구 온난화로 인해 급격히 데워졌던 적도 지방의 에너지가 북태평양의 기압능을 더욱 견고하게 틀어막는 현상이 나타나서 2021년에 비해 추위의 수준은 조금 모자랄 순 있어도 더 길어질 것이라는 것이라고 예측 가능합니다.
꽤 큰 충격이 올거에요.

왜냐하면 북극진동(AO), 태평양 10년 주기 진동(PDO), 매든-줄리안 진동(MJO) 모두 한기의 확장을 예고하고 있기 때문입니다. -4에 달하는 북극진동은 제트기류의 급격한 사행을, 마이너스 값을 유지하는 PDO 역시 라 니냐와 결합하여 북태평양 동쪽 해수면 온도를 낮게 유지, 한기를 크게 파고들게 하는 길을 열어줍니다. MJO는 Phase 7, 서태평양 일대인데. 이건 북태평양 상공에 강력한 블로킹을 형성한다는 말과 같습니다. 한기가 내려오는 길을 열고, 그 길이 아래로 열려있는데다, 길이 치워질 바람이 막힙니다.
ECMWF, GFS, EPS 앙상블 모두 미국 남동부 전체까지 음의 편차에 갇혀 있음을 보여줍니다. 뉴욕-플로리다로 이어지는 난방 수요가 순간적으로 폭증할 가능성이 있는데요. 이후 +T240~260까지 보면 한랭핵이 텍사스 남부까지 내려올 수 있다는 최악의 예보 (GFS 기준)도 나옵니다. 성층권에서 일어난 한번의 흔들림이 어디까지 영향을 주는건지 아찔하게만 느껴집니다. 올 겨울, 정말 힘든 시기가 찾아오지 않을까 생각됩니다. 미리미리 단단히 대비해야 할 것 같네요. 내심 이 예보가 다 틀렸으면 합니다만, 어쩔지 모르겠어요.
이 이미지는 현 시점 기준 ECMWF T+114, T+141, T+198, T+240 모델입니다. T+198 시점인 23일 밤 가량이 한파의 절정이고, 복사냉각이 겹쳐 24일~25일 사이까지 꽁꽁 얼어붙을 가능성이 큽니다. 850hPa 등온선 기준 -15℃선이 서울에, -11℃선이 부산에 내려와 있는게 보이는데요. 전국이 꽁꽁 얼어붙을걸로 보입니다. 베링해 기압능에 막힌 북극 한기가 절리저기압 형태로 백두산 인근에서 고착, 회전하며 냉기를 순환시켜 공기를 냉각시키는데요. 문제는 블로킹이 풀린 뒤입니다. 이 에너지가 북미로 가요.
이 태풍의 에너지가 북태평양 기압능을 강화, 한기가 빠져나가지 못하는 블로킹 역할을 하게 됩니다. 거기다 고기압과 저기압 사이 기압 경도력이 매우 큰 상태라 강풍 통로가 만들어집니다. 이로 인해 20일부터 지속될 한파는 7주일 이상 지속되며 평년기온보다 훨씬 아래에 있을 것으로 보입니다. 거의 평년 최저기온을 최고기온이 터치하는, 기막힌 상황입니다. 아무리 20일이 1년 중 가장 추운 절기인 대한이라지만 정말 이건 너무합니다. 이번 추위는 19일 오후부터 서서히 시동을 걸 것으로 보입니다. 850hPa에 한랭핵 이동이 보이죠.
한편 저 멀리서는 거대한 고기압 덩어리가 밀고 내려오고 있습니다. 한파를 알리는 신호입니다. 그 전까지는 며칠간 기온이 풀립니다. 24시간 예상 일기도를 보면 크게 3가지가 보입니다. 1. 몽골 인근에 있는 1054hPa 고기압 2. 1호 태풍 노카옌의 애매한 위치 3. 한반도 중부지방을 지나는 1014hPa 저기압 인데요. 먼저 강수구역은 대략 18일 밤~19일 오전 사이에 형성될 것으로 예상됩니다. 이 저기압의 이동이 대기에 길을 내게 됩니다. 그 길을 타고 고기압이 북극 한기를 쏟아 내리게 됩니다. 문제는 태풍인데요.
26/1/16 날씨 이것저것 아침부터 하늘이 어둡습니다. 그만큼 급하니 다른뉴스 다 제치고 황사 이야기부터 시작하겠습니다. 14일 고비 사막에서 발원된 황사가 어제부터 유입되고 있는데요. 이 황사는 오늘 오전까지 한반도 상공을 지납니다. 문제는 상공을 지나가는거라 원래는 피해가 적어야 하는데 야간에 국지적으로 형성된 고기압권으로 인해 대기가 급격하게 정체되며 지금 안개와 초미세먼지가 심해지는 지역이 관측되고 있습니다. 이후 낮에 대기가 가열되면서 연직 확산이 발생, 먼지는 완화되지만 출근길에는 마스크 착용을 꼭 부탁드립니다.

part of the problem here is i also don't know what examples are canonical and what patterns need to be showcased. the way this worked when i was on the team is that i talked to people who implemented and designed features to align on understanding what the actual set of idiomatic patterns is

For my second #HopeInHumanity post I would like to highlight two amazing Fedi frens of mine who bring me hope:

. They spread goodness in ways that lift others up while remaining grounded in the difficult realities of the world. They give me hope.
Cat is an abundantly wholesome presence on Fedi and this instance. Their gentle kindness, their top tier cat photos/shitposts/memes and their desire to boost others (giving users the fun experience of a rush of likes) help make this place the awesome spot it is. It is great having them here. Their posts give many the boost they need... Myself included. A beacon in the dark when it is the hardest to shine.
Lisa is basically a badass swamp witch. They rescue poor bat frens, are a caretaker, folk art enthusiast, lover of planes, writer of sweet notes to friends, nature appreciator, science lover and a person who makes you feel seen for who you are and make you feel loved. You'd be hard pressed to find a soul as genuine as theirs. They bring their sense of wonder in the world to others in a way that makes you appreciate the world and your passions.
