In 2009, Microsoft made it a focus of the Windows 7 user experience guidelines to reduce pointless notifications. They point out notifications like the classic “There are unused icons on your desktop” as being in the Windows XP Hall of Shame™. Seriously, it’s in there: learn.microsoft.com/windows/wi

In 2026, Windows interrupts you to ask if you want to clean up printers you haven’t used in a while. The intent is unclear (which printers?), there are too many choices, and it stays visible until you click an option.

For a good while, Microsoft were limping their way to good UX, and this doc was finally a clear set of guidelines. Now, it feels like they’ve slipped back into the Windows XP Hall of Shame™ era, and any good UX they happen to come up with is an accident.

A Windows 11 toast notification:
Print Cleanup Notification
We noticed you have some unused printers. Would you like to remove them?
[ Yes ] [ Ask later ] [ No ]

「斩杀线」

说到这里,中文各种小圈子里头「老人不喜欢新人」的现象是不是老人设的「斩杀线」?

(叠个甲,跟牢 A 口中「斩杀线」的不一样,这个帖跟政治无关)

Today's technology & language mess: Google's voice to text is censoring slur. I wanted to say DPD, in a message in French, which is a delivery company. It understood "des pédés", French homophobic slur, so of course, it censored it.
That delivery company must have many issues in French. 😅

Screenshot of my phone keyword with a voice to speech message where I mentioned, in French, that I was waiting for a package from DPD but instead it wrote " des p****", censored version of "des pédés"

An obvious remark.

In the world of one-click LLM proofreads, I immediately value your post/blog/comment/email if you used your brain to write it.

There are signs that and I'm sure we can all pick those writing styles intuitively now. I can't believe this but it is almost a sign of respect in 2026 that the person replying to you used their own thoughts. It doesn't matter if you write perfect text with no grammatical mistakes, because it is human. Please don't let this practice die. Anyone else feel this way?

Newer HP machines ( laptops, desktops) seem to be woefully incompatible with .

During boot, both the regular kernel and the ramdisk kernel hang at "entry point at 0x1001000". After tinkering for literal hours (BIOS options, different boot mediums, different versions, etc) I managed to get it working.

The problem is with the memory space. It can be fixed relatively simple with a custom kernel that uses a different address space. Here is the patch: marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=16

Now running OpenBSD-current on an Elitebook with an eleventh gen Intel i5. The special keys (screen brightness, volume, etc) work out of the box :flan_hacker:

RE: grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/

Was zu viel ist, ist zu viel! @GrapheneOS jetzt geblockt.

Open standards – like the Open Document Format used by – are extremely beneficial to end users. They reduce vendor lock-in, improve compatibility between apps, and preserve your data for longer: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl
