WANTED: Intel Architecture Labs 1990’s CD-ROM’s. They appear to have maybe been monthly. They contained a mirror of Intel’s ‘download.intel.com’ ftp server, specifically the /ial/ subdirectory which is not in the 2014 backup of the site on archive.org.

Lots and lots of white papers and design guideline documents in there. Especially looking for ones from the late 1990’s (1998-ish onward) if they exist. I’ve seen references in mailing lists to them that lead me to believe they do.
Example gem: intel trying to cover its ass after the FDIV bug, and have some more FDIV

Photo of an Intel Architecture Labs CD-R or CD-ROM from the mid 1990's (september 1995), stolen from archive dot org which has exactly two CD's backed up.

GenAI, The Snake Eating Its Own Tail: How tools like ChatGPT and Claude are destroying the ecosystems they rely on, and what to do about it ybrikman.com/blog/2026/01/21/g

Great blog post. This one explained how Google, OpenAI and other AI companies killed the open web, which was once made of independent forums, news sites, wikis, blogs, high quality journalism websites, books, and fan fiction or art.

Anyone experimenting with LoRA mesh nodes, very impressed with Meshcore here in Southern California (in particular, ability to get a message some distance with acknowledgement). I'm switching all my nodes over from Meshtastic. I was getting almost no delivery and no hops on Meshtastic, but getting out reliably on meshcore. Make sure you have your area's frequency settings correct, defaults don't work.

crowdsource advice-seeking on latex/markdown

I started writing this book project using zettlr in markdown, because that seemed like the best way to incorporate many citations from a wild variety of journals/books/articles. But I am now having serious problems trying to integrate files.

Latex is hard but I know it quite well, I just don't have a latex editor that I like that's reliable (I'm not doing this on overleaf, it's just me, no sharing needed).

Recs? Advice? I'm running Ubuntu.

"It’s the closest we have come in the U.S. in almost a century to a coordinated work stoppage across different sectors. No unions have yet said they’ve voted to strike, but the potential for disruption is real."

On 20 January the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed written by an Iranian politician promoting the Islamic Republic's viewpoint.

Today, we wrote a letter to the Journal's editorial team requesting that they qualify the article, explaining how it was submitted for publication (particularly whether the Internet was used) and also highlighting that the Iranian public are denied the opportunity to express their opposing viewpoints due to the ongoing internet blackout.

Letter transcript:

Regarding the Journal's publication of Iranian minister Abbas Araghchi's op-ed on 20 January 2026, without prejudice to its merit, I suggest that instances where a government has their writing published while they cut off their citizens' ability to do the same through the use of telecommunications blackouts should be prefixed with two vital pieces of context for transparency — namely, it should be stated:

by what means the op ed was submitted, digitally, over the internet, or otherwise
that an equal platform was denied to that government's opposition due to digital restrictions

I believe you have the technical material you need to do this from our interview on the 20th, and from years of collaboration with the Journal covering incidents around the world.

Further, I recommend that this policy be extended to future op-eds published during a nation-scale internet blackout in any country.
