What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Reading about the Collingridge dilemma (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collingr). Essentially, by the time we have enough understanding of a technology, it may be so "locked in" to society that it is very difficult to change anything about it, largely due to vested interests and incentives. Before a technology goes to market we may have some knowledge, but not enough proof to slow or stop the tech.

A lot of startups manipulate this space - think Uber and Airbnb - and we are seeing the attempts at it with AI.

So much of my focus in tech industry is on this exact thing: how do we anticipate negative consequences and course correct before they are embedded and contribute to social harm?

Many problems that new tech products introduce are easily predictable: cops using surveillance software to stalk their exes or someone exonerated, AI teaching kids how to make meth, etc.

Companies should anticipate these issues and do something about them - and be held accountable when they fail.

of all the coding I do, I never want to [redacted self violence] more than when I'm doing CSS.

does anyone know of any good guides/courses for debugging it/having better mental models for working with it?

I need to read every layout all the way through, and I have wizard zines pocket guide.

When she was very young, my daughter looked me straight in the eye, right out of the blue, and said to me with the utter earnestness only a 3-year-old can summon:

“Be brave! Be safe! Be purple!”

I’ve been hanging on to that advice a lot lately.

What I'm listening to today: "Singularity 157", Echovocation

Long but satisfying Space Music saga. Watch carefully at the bottom and you'll see that what sounds like the lead synth is actually a kalimba (simplified Zimbabwean finger harp). You're basically listening to a long kalimba performance fed into a long chain of modular equipment that filters the sounds into aftershocks and echoes far larger than its input. Interplanetary craft approaching space dock.

Idea: "The unbillionaires list", to promote contributors to the common.

A collaborative website that lists people who created something useful to millions but purposedly choose to put in in the common and didn’t earn money directly from it (or not as much as expected)

Besides those listed in ploum.net/2026-01-22-why-no-eu

I would add Henri Dunant (Red Cross, he died in great poverty), Didier Pittet (who invented the hydroalcoolic gel we now use everyday).

Hello. I'm Rufus. I joined a couple weeks ago. You may have seen pictures of my

I co-wrote a pretty fun book called The Complete History (and Fistory) of Underspace - about a girl who finds the doorway to a magical world on the roof of her school. You can buy the ebook or audiobook everywhere, or hit me up and I’ll send you it free because screw capitalism

But mostly I’m here for cat pictures. So here’s Molly, looking unimpressed with literally everything I do

A black & white cat, turning her head to the camera, with her eyes half closed. Her expression says she's sick of your stupidity, and isn't it about time you sorted your life out?

Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you. They tell people you're doing horrible depraved crimes. Would you just block them?

What happens when other people don't block them? When other people believe the lies and share them?

What if this turns into real life abuse and violence against you and your family?

This is what vulnerable groups face from bigots. Bigoted accounts need to be shut down, servers which refuse to remove bigots should be defederated.

"Just block them" doesn't work.

Every time I find a screamingly -wrong- pattern in an existing codebase these days, I'm also hit with the realization that LLMs have absolutely been trained on this codebase and will replicate this pattern for other people who have similar use-cases.

I’ve just measured the power consumption of my MacBook Pro M1 (M1 Pro, which I’ve been using for years).
When connected to an external monitor and closed, it averages between 5 and 7 watts. When everything is idle, it’s around 4. When I turn the screen off, it drops to 2-3 W.
Incredible.

RE: mastodon.bsd.cafe/@vermaden/11

Fortunately 'problem' will remain only in Plasma login manager and not KDE project.

Neal Gompa that leads development of Fedora KDE clarified the situation here:
- social.gompa.me/@neal/11593647
- social.gompa.me/@neal/11593960

From the bad news ... KDE/Plasma will still dump X11 support.
